The Internet Archive Project

The Internet Archive Project (IAP), which maintains a library of the world's digital assets, including all Web sites and legally accessible digital books, music and videos, has been growing at a rate of 100 terabytes every two months, and was in search of a new hardware and file system as well as a datacenter option that would increase flexibility, responsiveness and capacity for growth.

Recently, the IAP switched from a customized architecture to key Sun Storage and Systems solutions to manage their explosive growth requirements. Specifically, the IAP selected Sun's Open Storage products and technologies including ZFS to archive its data and Sun Modular Datacenter, with its 3 petabyte capacity, as its primary datacenter.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center

The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) faced some increasingly common challenges in extending its computing resources. The IT team had a growing number of requests for servers, but couldn't fill them because its datacenter was packed to the limit. There was no further power and cooling capacity in the building to support more servers, and re-tooling these utilities is costly and time-consuming. A separate project to install a row of water-cooled racks had taken a year to complete, again because of the struggle to bring sufficient power and cooling into the building.

It is very exciting to have the Sun Modular Datacenter here at our center because of its simplicity. Every organization, whether it is a physics lab or a financial institution, is going to be faced with the same problem of running out of datacenter support resources. Sun Modular Datacenter helped us answer the very real challenge of how to scale up computing resources quickly, and this has meant the difference between success and failure.
— Richard Mount, Director of Computing Services, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center

Hansen Transmissions

Hansen Transmissions, a Belgium-based wind turbine and industrial gearbox designer, manufacturer, and supplier, is responding to the increasing demand for wind power with the expansion of its manufacturing facilities in India and China. In this multi-phase construction project, Hansen selected Sun MD to help ensure the Coimbatore, India plant would be up-and-running as quickly as possible.

In planning for Hansen Transmissions' expansion in India, we considered building a new datacenter ourselves, but determined we needed to be able to offer IT services while the plant was under construction. The Sun Modular Datacenter S20 is a great solution for us — cost effective and easy to deploy. Using the Sun Modular Datacenter, we'll be able to offer IT services in a semi-finished factory and start seeing ROI almost immediately. We also expect to use the same model to support our expansion in other countries.
