Rules and Restrictions for Equipment to Be Placed in a Sun MD S20 and D20
 
  • There are six (D20) or seven (S20) general purpose racks that can be used to hold any type of equipment that is compatible.
  • These racks each have 40 rack units available.
  • There is an additional rack (called the infrastructure rack). It has 25 RU available for networking equipment.
All Equipment Must Be:
  • Rack mountable in a standard 19" rack with rail kits that mount on front and back posts with square holes.
  • For standard depth racks, equipment must be less than 30.75 inches/781mm in depth INCLUDING rail kits, cable arms, cables, power cords, etc.
  • For a Sun MD D20: Equipment in the three deep racks must be less than 45.25 inches/1150mm in depth INCLUDING rail kits, cable arms, cables, power cords, etc.
  • Front to Back cooling.
    NOTE: Networking equipment should also be front to back cooling. Small side to side cooled switches (1 or 2 RU and less than 20 inches deep) may be used in the top half of racks. For information regarding other switches that are side cooled or top to bottom cooled, please email asksunmd@sun.com
Mounting Considerations
  • Please mount large and heavy equipment starting from the bottom of the racks.
  • Max 1900 pounds per rack.
  • Top serviced equipment may not be mounted in the topmost Rack Units of a rack.
    - Examples of such equipment are: Netra 1290, E2900, V480/V490, X4500
    - For the X4500/X4540 only 9 may be installed per rack.
Power Considerations
  • There are two power options for racks 2-7 or 8:
    1. 12.5KW max per rack (standard)
    2. 25KW max per rack (optional)
      Option A contains two (2) PDUs (supplied by independent feeds). Each PDU has a set of three (3) power strips, each containing 6 x IEC C13 and 2 x IEC C19 outlets.

      Option B ADDS two (2) PDUs (supplied by independent feeds). Each PDU has a set of two (2) power strips, each containing 6 x IEC C13 and 2 x IEC C19 outlets. This brings the total to four (4) PDUs (2+2 independent feeds). Each power feed would have five (5) power strips, each containing 6 x IEC C13 and 2 x IEC C19 outlets.
    NOTE: Two adapter cables are provide with each power strip that may be used to convert the C19 outlets on the strip to C13 outlets. Customers must order power cords for connecting payload to the Sun MD!

    All racks provide AC power ONLY!
    Payload must be able to plug into IEC C-13 or IEC C-19 outlets.
    Low Voltage Sun MD configurations supply 190 to 220 VAC to the outlets in the racks.
    High Voltage Sun MD configurations supply 220 to 240 VAC to the outlets in the racks.
    If total power consumption in a single rack is greater than 12.5KW, then the optional PDU power kit MUST be purchased.

Sun StorageTek Virtual Tape Library Plus 2.0
This product is comprised of several other systems that are compatible with the Sun MD: X4200 M2/X4600 M2 server, STK6540 disk tray(s), and a Brocade 5000 FC Switch.  The VTL 2.0 also uses a 3COM 2126-G switch which also fits.

NOTE: The VTL appliance ship standard with the Sun StorageTek F40 rack, but can be installed into a Sun MD rack. This re-installation is subject to custom PS pricing.

Caution for Tape drives, libraries and autoloaders!
Tape media is especially sensitive to environmental variances, such as temperature and humidity. Steps should be taken to have the appropriate service vestibule or shelter around the doors to the Sun MD when servicing. External temperature and humidity should be equalized to the internal temperature and humidity before open the doors.
