Increasingly, web sites that publish new content on a regular basis provide a list of news headline links to their latest content. In addition to displaying these headlines on their own web sites, many publishers make them available for syndication using a dialect of XML called RSS or "Really Simple Syndication." That way, these syndicated headlines can be included in other web sites and newsreaders, however, they won't include the full text of articles. By clicking on the RSS feed headline, you will be taken to the original site to read the full article.
Look for the

Yevgeniya is a PhD Student in the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Essex. Listen in and learn how Yevgeniya's passion for genetic programming, computer science, and dance lead her towards interesting projects and an active OSUM Club. In a new segment called "What do you do?", Jordan interviews a Sun employee and learns what they do for the company. In the first installment, he interviews Kevin Roebuck, Business Development Manager for Sun eLearning. Kevin's main focus is helping students connect, collaborate, and learn online. Campus Cast 7 Riddle The technical lead for my project comes up to me and says, "Jordan, could you please write me a method that prints out all of the perfect squares between 1 and 1000?" A perfect square, of course, is a number which is the product of the same number. For example, 4 is a perfect square because it is 2 times 2. 9 is the next perfect square because it is 3 times 3. I say, "Piece of cake, I'll just write a loop between 1 and 1000 and during each iteration multiplies the number by itself to get the perfect square." So I hand the code my my technical lead, and he looks at my with a scowl. "Humph" he says, "I think multiplying the two numbers will take too long. I bet you can do this with at most a few additions during each iteration of the loop." What solution does my project lead have in mind? Answer: We can easily write a program that computes and prints the perfect squares that looks something like this:
for (int x = 1; x <= 1000; x++) {
int square = x * x;
System.out.println("The next perfect square is " + square);
}
However, that does a multiplication each iteration of the loop. We realize that if we know the perfect square for 'x', then the perfect square for (x + 1) is (x + 1) * (x + 1). When we expand this, we get x^2 + 2x + 1. So if we already know x^2 from the previous iteration of the loop, we can compute the perfect squares much quicker as follows:
int square = 1;
System.out.println("The next perfect square is 1");
for (int x = 1; x < 1000; x++) {
square = square + x + x + 1;
System.out.println("The next perfect square is " + square);
}

Lightweight User Interface Toolkit (LWUIT)
Guest Host/Blogger: Ed Ort, Senior Staff Information Engineer, Sun Microsystems Episode OverviewDeep Dive: Lightweight User Interface Toolkit (LWUIT)Last May I had the opportunity to attend a technical keynote session on mobility tools and technologies at the 2008 JavaOne Conference. There were a number of interesting demos, but the one that really caught my eye was a demonstration of the Lightweight User Interface Toolkit (LWUIT) by Yoav Barel, the manager of the Sun group in Israel that developed the toolkit. LWUIT is a lightweight user interface (UI) library that developers can bundle with their applications. Significantly, LWUIT allows developers to overcome a lot of the challenges they face in creating compelling UIs for mobile devices and in making those UIs appear and act consistently across the range of mobile devices that run Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME). Think Swing for mobile devices and you'll come pretty close to the power and functionality of LWUIT. In fact, the development team was inspired by the Swing approach, even to the point of adopting Swing's MVC paradigm.
LWUIT offers a wide range of features for UI development including support for rendering, tabs, layouts, transition effects (even 3D rotation), as well as an easy to use theme editor targeted to graphic designers. But the really amazing thing is that the team was able to fit all this functionality in a footprint that's rightsized for small mobile devices. I came out of that session inspired by the demonstration and when it came time to schedule a deep dive on a mobility-related topic, I lost no time in contacting Yoav Barel. As it happened, Yoav was scheduled to participate in some meetings in the San Francisco Bay area. This gave me and other members of the SDN team the opportunity to do a deep dive with him on LWUIT. We hope you enjoy it. We sure did. Show Notes
