Features and Benefits

Sun Blade Modular Systems let you seamlessly mix different processor technologies and operating systems in a single blade chassis. We designed our blade I/O architecture to provide I/O support that is just as flexible by allowing each blade to have its own "blade-unique" I/O configuration. It's the only way to prevent networking bottlenecks while ensuring the system can support your most challenging and diversified applications. See Sun's complete line of independent, open PCIe ExpressModules for different fabrics and Network Express Modules (NEMs) that aggregate cables and ports to slash costs and simplify system management.

Key Benefits

Sun's PCIe ExpressModules: Blade Unique, Independent and Flexible I/O

100% standards-based

Sun Blade EMs are the only truly open blade I/O based on industry-standard PCIe technology. Choose from Sun I/O modules to support all major fabrics (e.g., Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, GbE, 10 GbE), operating systems (e.g., Solaris 10, Windows, Linux, VMware), and processors.

Easy installation and upgradeability

Sun's I/O modules are the quickest to install and the easiest to upgrade to meet your evolving I/O requirements. And they are quite simple to integrate into your existing datacenter environment because they are entirely based on the industry PCIe EM standard. As a result, you'll see positive business results faster.

Modular scalability

Sun's independent I/O delivers modular scalability, with up to 270 Gb/sec throughput (per blade) to handle the most demanding, throughput-hungry applications.

Moving toward I/O virtualization

Independent I/O adheres to PCI-SIG specifications, which makes truly open, flexible I/O virtualization possible. Give each Sun Blade module its own unique I/O configuration with the use of EMs. Or, when common I/O is required, connect all server modules with chassis-wide NEMs. No other blade server gives you this range of choices.

Hot-pluggable, hot-swappable components

Ours is the only blade architecture where major I/O components are hot-pluggable and hot-swappable. Replacing or upgrading these components can be accomplished in minutes—without opening a blade case or using a screwdriver—and with the system running. Much lower costs and less downtime compared with the competition.

Sun's Network Express Modules: Scalability and Cost Reduction

Seamless chassis integration

Sun Blade NEMs are seamlessly integrated into the Sun Blade chassis. This means dramatically reduced cost and complexity as well as simplified blade server deployment into existing network fabrics.

Massive scalability

The QDR InfiniBand NEM protects your investment by positioning your blades today to meet future needs. Our solution can scale up from enterprise clustering to high performance computing.

  • 30 ports of 4x QDR and 24 ports of GbE
  • Delivers 1,536 Gbps of throughput per NEM
  • Enables cluster solutions to scale to over 5000 nodes.

Cable and port consolidation

Sun Blade NEMs aggregate cables and ports, reducing cabling by 6:1 (QDR InfiniBand NEM) or up to 40:1 (10 GbE Virtualized NEM). Consolidation means simplified or zero-management along with major cost savings. In fact, our cost-per-port is dramatically lower vs. offerings from HP or IBM.

Virtualized access to 10 GbE network

The 10 GbE Virtualized NEM provides all Sun Blade modules in the chassis with virtualized access to the 10 GbE network. This capability facilitates rapid changes (e.g., adding, moving, or replacing blades) and deploying host-side virtualization. No need to change the connection to the NEM or the network.
