High Efficiency, High Capacity
For a datacenter providing 1 MW of power to compute servers, using an efficient cooling infrastructure with Sun Cooling Door Systems can save up to 3.5 million kWh per year, or 2130 MT of CO2 emissions per year. At this rate, you can recoup the acquisition cost of the Sun Cooling Door Systems in 14 months. [1]
A rear-door passive design, such as the one used by Sun Cooling Door Systems, is up to 6x more efficient than traditional datacenter cooling systems, and up to twice as efficient as standalone in-row or overhead cooling systems.
In addition, Sun Cooling Door Systems deliver up to 35 kW of cooling capacity per rack. Compare this to the 15 kW provided by competitive rear-door systems, and to the 5 kW or less commonly found in traditional installations with raised floor cooling.
[1] Compared with standard cooling systems. Sun estimates that a datacenter with standard CRAC-based cooling systems and efficient airflow design can reach a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.7. A highly efficient datacenter utilizing a holistic design for closely coupled cooling using Sun Cooling Door Systems can reach a PUE of 1.3 . Compute servers used were Sun Blade 6048 Modular Systems with a power requirement of 25 kW per rack. Energy costs were calculated using a rate of $0.10/kWh.

Cooling Technology Choice
Efficient cooling can dramatically reduce energy costs, but only if the solution works with your existing datacenter design. That's why Sun gives customers a choice of cooling technology for the Sun Blade 6048 Modular System --refrigerant gas or chilled water. Sun is the first vendor to offer this degree of choice, which makes strategic planning easier and allows IT to leverage infrastructure investments.
Remove Heat at the Source
Sun Cooling Door Systems are more efficient than traditional datacenter cooling systems because they remove heat directly at the source--the back of the blade rack. In a typical datacenter, fans must recirculate hot air through a few cooling units distributed at the datacenter edges. For today's powerful, dense compute systems, these methods impose their own electrical demands and waste energy moving air around.
Sun Constellation System
Sun Cooling Door Systems are part of Sun's High Performance Computing (HPC) family, which includes the Sun Constellation System, the world's first open petascale computing environment. The cooling systems integrate easily with the Sun Blade 6048 modular system, adding only up to 6.3 inches to the back of the Sun Blade 6048 Chassis, which is the foundation of the Sun Constellation System.
