Sun's T5440 Server Is Built To Multitask

InformationWeek Review, Nov 01, 2008
We found the all-purpose "ldm" LDom-controller command easy to use, and we had our first LDom up and running within minutes. Adding and removing them also was a snap.

International Fund Services (IFS)

IFS reduced the total number of physical servers from 320 to 40 using LDoms and Solaris Containers.

United States Air Force Accommodates Growth Demands Using Sun Virtualization Solution

Running LDoms and Solaris Containers on CMT servers, US Air Force was able to reduce rack space to achieve a 13:1 consolidation ratio.

ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia)

For the portal phase of the project, ICBC is deploying the Sun software on Sun Fire T2000 servers with the Solaris 10 Operating System. The company is using Logical Domains (LDoms) to further increase server utilization, by running multiple copies of the operating system simultaneously.

Moodlerooms, Inc.

"By basing our datacenter infrastructure on Sun Fire T2000 servers and the Solaris 10 Operating System, we know we can guarantee uptime. We haven't taken service down once in a single year, and we need only one person to run the entire operation. The thing just runs itself, and we designed it that way from the ground up." Stuart Sim, CTO and Chief Architect, Moodlerooms, Inc.

Primus Canada

Now in full production, the Primus team has proven the Logical Domains layout, become familiar with the T2000 server and is taking steps to consolidate the four platforms running VoIP onto virtual machines.

Customer Testimonials

"As Europe's second largest web host, at peak we get up to 1 billion mail-in deliveries (email traffic) per day. After testing the new quad-socket Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server, we discovered that only one T5440 is sufficient to handle the whole load and can replace 10 of our existing Sun Fire T2000 servers. Also Sun's open-source, no cost virtualization technologies, Logical Domains (LDoms) and Solaris Containers can further help us consolidate even more applications. In addition, we were really impressed with the performance, scalability, and eco-efficiency of the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server. In fact, we anticipate we may save up to 30% on power consumption alone." Rene Wienholtz, CIO and management board member, STRATO

"Openwave Integra provides an open interface platform designed to flexibly address the market's need for fast, open and secure service management, said Sean MacNeill, vice president and general manager, services management and global services, Openwave. Our recent test of Integra on UltraSPARC T2 and UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor-based systems showed excellent performance and scalability. Customers can reap significant benefits from using LDoms on these CoolThreads servers, resulting in huge savings by reducing number of additional systems, low power consumption and less space. We're looking forward to the new quad socket Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440, which could provide additional performance with capacity to support twice the number of LDoms thus providing excellent Price/Performance for our customers." Sean MacNeill, Vice President and General Manager, Services Management and Global Services, Openwave

"The Solaris 10 Operating System and Logical Domains provides DigiTar with rock-solid fault isolation and stronger partitioning of server resources. These two qualities power the stability we need to ensure our customers receive business-critical communications 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and at a competitive price.

At DigiTar, using Logical Domains and the Solaris 10 Operating System opens up new possibilities for consolidating mission-critical systems," said Jason Williams, COO and CTO of DigiTar. "While Solaris 10 Containers continue to be a pervasive element of DigiTar's infrastructure and planning, we run certain database applications that cannot risk an operating system fault taking down two or more of these systems simultaneously. Because Logical Domains do not share operating system instances, we can further leverage power-saving Niagara-platforms to consolidate diverse database applications.without the risk of a single operating system flaw disrupting our 24x7 operations. Only Solaris 10 offers us the flexibility to alternate between lightweight and regimented virtualization technologies as our needs dictate." Jason Williams, COO and CTO, DigiTar
