A study by McAfee, a leading computer security provider, concluded that a data breach that exposed customers' personal
information could cost the company an average of $268,000, just to inform their customers – even if the lost data is never
used. Among the respondents of the McAfee survey, 61 percent said data leakage they experienced was the doing of insiders,
and 23 percent said those leaks were malicious. On the other side of the coin, a study by Javelin Strategy & Research
revealed that 77 percent of 2,750 consumers polled said they would stop shopping at stores that suffered data breaches.
