CMT Tuning and Resources

Sun has embarked on a number of projects with different GNU/Linux organizations and communities as part of its efforts within the open source community, and to fuel industry innovation for Chip-Multi-Threading technologies such as UltraSPARC T1 processor.

These include the release of Solaris as an Open Source project known as OpenSolaris and the release of the UltraSPARC T1 processor under the GPL license as part of the OpenSPARC initiative.

Releasing both the processor design and ABIs has enabled leading Linux distributions to accelerate their porting efforts to the UltraSPARC T1. The result is a choice of certified Linux distributions available for Sun Fire Servers with CoolThreads Technology.


Ubuntu Linux

Working with Canonical, Sun has certified the Ubuntu distribution for use on Sun Fire CoolThreads servers. Technical support is available either free of charge by the community or on a commercial basis by Canonical.

The Sun Fire T1000 Server supports both Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) and Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) The Sun Fire T2000 Server supports Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)


Gentoo Linux

Gentoo Linux 2006.1 for Sun UltraSPARC 64bit architecture is now available from Gentoo to run on the Sun Fire T1000 and Sun Fire T2000 Servers with CoolThreads technology. All support is provided by the Gentoo Community.
