Measuring Power Consumption with Your Power Meter

If you need detailed instructions on using the P4400 power meter, please refer to the manual.

We have also created a quick, step by step instruction guide to using your Power Meter with the Sun Fire T2000 server.

Measuring the Power Consumption of the Sun Fire T1000 Server

  1. Plug the P4400 directly into your wall socket.
  2. Plug the single power cord for the Sun Fire T1000 Server into the P4400.
  3. Boot the Sun Fire T1000 server.
  4. Select the appropriate parameter you wish to measure (i.e. volts, amps, or watts).
  5. Start running your workload on the Sun Fire T1000 server, and record the energy consumption.
You can these repeat this process to measure the power consumption of your existing servers and develop direct comparisons of server efficiency and performance per watt. See the section below on "Interpreting Your Results"

Measuring the Power Consumption of the Sun Fire T2000 Server

The Sun Fire T2000 server has dual redundant power supplies, while the P4400 has a single AC inlet.

The server will support running from a single power supply, or, in standard operation, will split the power load across both available power supply units, using two separate power cords.

As a result, there are two methods you can use to measure power consumption with a single inlet device such as the P4400.

If you wish to measure power consumption without any additional power adaptors, follow the steps below:

  1. Plug the P4400 directly into your wall socket.
  2. Plug a single power cord into either of power supply units of the Sun Fire T2000 server.
  3. Plug that single power cord into the P4400.
  4. Boot the Sun Fire T2000 server.
  5. Select the appropriate reading you wish to measure (i.e. volts, amps, or watts).
  6. Start running your workload on the Sun Fire T2000 server, and record the energy consumption.
By adding an additional 1:3 adaptor, you can run both the two separate power cords from the two server power supplies directly into the power meter.

Measure Your Power Savings & Win Your Trial Server

If you are a Try & Buy Participant in the US and Canada, you received a free power meter with your trial Sun Fire T1000 or T2000 server. This power meter will allow you to measure your actual power consumption, in your own IT environment, running your workloads. If you submit your detailed results to our Open Performance Contest, you could win your trial unit.

Use Your Power Meter to Calculate Your SWaP

Evaluating a new server for your data center is no longer simply a matter of measuring raw performance. With today's increasing demands, you also need to consider how much power, air conditioning and space a server consumes. While traditional metrics are good for calculating throughput, they don't consider these new power and space demands in the equation. Use your power meter to determine your CoolThreads Server SWaP -- the Space, Watts and Performance (SWaP) metric.

Warranty and Support

Sun does not provide any warranty or support for any power meters used with the Sun Fire CoolThreads servers, even if they were supplied with the server as part of a local promotion.
