Sun Fire CoolThreads Try and Buy Resource

Welcome to the Sun Fire CoolThreads Servers Try and Buy Power Meter Program

The need to fuel the global power grid grows. So does the appetite for faster, better, cheaper computing infrastructure. But faster can be cooler. Better can be cleaner. Cheaper can be greener. It's called eco responsibility. Your business benefits - reduced energy and datacenter costs - and so does the environment.

Sun Fire CoolThreads servers have been proven to deliver breakthrough performance while dramatically reducing energy and space consumption, allowing customers to instantly add new capacity to their over-burdened data centers, while at the same time slashing costs.

To enable customers to obtain an accurate measure of power consumption, Sun provides handy web-based power calculators for both the Sun Fire T1000 Server and Sun Fire T2000 Server.

While the calculators are extremely reliable, the most accurate method of assessing energy consumption is by measuring the actual power consumed by your server, in your environment, running your workloads. To assist in this process, Sun has created this guide to demonstrate how to use low cost power meters with the Sun Fire CoolThreads servers.

Which Power Meter is Best

There are a range of power meters available on the market, ranging in price from $10 to over $20,000. The good news is that low cost power meters, retailing from $25 upwards can provide accurate measures of power consumption at a server level. If you want to measure power consumption of a rack or an entire data center, you need a very different class of device.

Sun does not endorse any specific power meter, however for the illustration below, Sun has used the P4400 Kill A Watt power meter from P3 International, supplied by Teledynamics LLP, priced at about $30.

It is important to note that power meters are generally country-specific, to account for local variances in voltage and outlet connectors, and so the meter above is suitable for use in North America only.

Using the Power Meter

Sun has developed a quick guide to using your power meter. This guide is not a substitute for the P4400 operation manual, but will help you get started on measuring your actual power consumption on Sun CoolThreads servers.

Measure Your Power Savings & Win Your Trial Server

If you are a Try & Buy Participant in the US and Canada, you received a free power meter with your trial Sun Fire T1000 or T2000 server. This power meter will allow you to measure your actual power consumption, in your own IT environment, running your workloads. If you submit your detailed results to our Open Performance Contest, you could win your trial unit.

Use Your Power Meter to Calculate Your SWaP

Evaluating a new server for your data center is no longer simply a matter of measuring raw performance. With today's increasing demands, you also need to consider how much power, air conditioning and space a server consumes. While traditional metrics are good for calculating throughput, they don't consider these new power and space demands in the equation. Use your power meter to determine your CoolThreads Server SWaP -- the Space, Watts and Performance (SWaP) metric.

Warranty and Support

Sun does not provide any warranty or support for any power meters used with the Sun Fire CoolThreads servers, even if they were supplied with the server as part of a local promotion.

All warranty and support issues with the P4400 power meters should be directed to the following email address: techsupport@p3international.com
