The Next Wave of Dependability:
The ultimate requirement of today's computers is to provide continuous availability for performing the critical tasks that businesses require. They are expected to transparently recover from common types of failures and have the ability to compensate for unplanned outages. However, computer hardware and software has become increasingly complex, creating more opportunities for failure. Efficient handling of both hardware and software failures is essential for improving overall system dependability.
Sun has established a reputation for delivering enterprise servers with the power, massive scalability, high levels of security, and mainframe-class functionality that companies demand from their systems. Over the past 10+ years, Sun has proven its ability to provide dependable systems that stock exchanges count on, financial institutions bank on, and all organizations can rely on.
With the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), Sun is introducing a new architecture for building and deploying systems and services capable of Predictive Self-Healing. Self-healing technology enables Sun systems to accurately predict component failures and mitigate many serious problems before they actually occur. This innovative technology -- which Sun plans to incorporate into both hardware and software products -- helps Sun systems and services maximize availability in the face of software and hardware faults. It facilitates a simpler and more effective end-to-end experience for system administrators, reducing the cost of ownership. The first self-healing features -- Solaris Fault Manager and Solaris Service Manager -- are available as part of the Solaris 10 OS.
Under previous versions of the Solaris OS, components of fault management technology are available as well. With the Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 OS, three key features of fault management technology are Auto Diagnosis and Recovery, Persistent CPU Offlining and Memory Page Retirement.
- Extended service uptime
- Enhanced system manageability
- Reduced cost of ownership
