Added Value through Higher Performance

Faster across the entire range

The Sun Fire V245 server performs up to 18 percent faster than the Sun Fire V240 server. But it's not just the 1.5 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors. A large part of the boost is due to the server's several I/O enhancements. With four all-new PCI-X and PCIe slots, four integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports, a serial communications port, and four USB ports, the Sun Fire V245 server can span the market from an entry-level one-processor system to a full-featured two-processor system. The Sun Fire V245 server help you add capacity by running applications faster.

UltraSPARC IIIi processor performance: speed, scalability, and availability

The Sun Fire V245 server supports one or two 1.5 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors. The UltraSPARC IIIi processor is a highly integrated processor that implements the 64-bit, SPARC V9 architecture and Sun's Visual Instruction Set (VIS). The UltraSPARC IIIi processor contains primary data and instruction caches and a unified 1 MB Level 2 cache. It also contains a DDR133 memory controller, a JBus controller, and sophisticated power management capabilities.

Add capacity by running applications faster

On average, the Sun Fire Solaris workgroup servers deliver up to 18 percent application acceleration using the latest I/O technologies for higher throughput. The new addition of PCI Express ports provide the raw I/O speed that today's applications need to perform at their full potential. The end result is faster applications with fewer servers, which saves money, space, and energy.

High throughput, JBus-style

The system JBus is the main memory-coherent interconnect for the Sun Fire V245 servers. It joins up to two UltraSPARC IIIi CPUs to the JBus-to-PCIe bridge, which then interfaces with the system I/O. System JBus interconnect lets one CPU communicate with other CPUs and gain access to system-wide memory. JBus operates at 188 MHz with a 128-bit shared address and data path between each of JBus device. That speed gives you scalability with minimal contention and latency between processing and I/O subsystems.

Improved Availability

Higher availability through reliability is here

Sun Fire V245 servers are not only faster, but they provide higher availability. Their boost in documented availability comes from a combination of their redundant power supplies, hot-swap fans, hot-plug disks, and the data protection choices of hardware RAID 0 and 1. As a result, they can provide continuous availability with just three minutes of unplanned downtime per year.

Availability through redundancy

The Sun Fire V245 server provides an economical approach to deploying services redundantly. Its 2 RU size and low cost allow it to be used as a basis for redundantly deploying services for higher availability when compared to competing alternatives. Four built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports also provide redundancy options.

New PCI-X and PCIe Performance Is Here

Upgrade your PCI connectivity

The Sun Fire V245 server offer new PCI-X and PCIe connectivity to accelerate your throughput.

Sun Fire V245 Server
Supports a maximum of four PCI cards:

  • One full-height/full-length PCI-X 133 MHz/64-bit
  • One full-height/short-length PCI-X 133 MHz/64-bit
  • One PCIe x8/16-way connector low-profile/short
  • One PCIe x4/16-way connector low-profile/short

Network Connectivity

Gigabit Ethernet

With four on-board RJ45 10/100/1000Base-T (Copper) Gigabit Fast Ethernet ports for high throughput, the networking capabilities of the V245 server is excellent. It gives you a lot of flexible choices. Also included are one asynchronous RJ45 serial communication port (not POSIX compliant) and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface, which provides Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) access for control of the server, including power switching and on-board processor access.

Save on I/O

Four integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports let you avoid the expense of purchasing and installing PCI cards to get Gigabit Ethernet functionality.

USB choices

For additional connectivity options, four USB ports are available on the Sun Fire V245 server to attach USB devices.

Expansion options

Internally, up to four drives can be installed on the Sun Fire V245 server. Additional networking connectivity and external storage is supported using a host bus adapter.

Better Memory and Storage

System memory flexibility

The Sun Fire V245 server includes eight DDR1-133 memory slots. Each DIMM slot supports 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB, and DIMMs, with the DIMMs giving a maximum memory capacity of 16 GB per system. The supported memory is DDR-1 SDRAM PC2700 DIMMs.

Up to four hot plug 73 GB SAS disks

The Sun Fire V245 server can be configured with up to four hot-plug, serial-attached SAS 73 GB disk drives.

Simplified System Management

Cradle-to-grave management support

Sun Fire V245 servers come with integrated Advanced Lights Out Manager (common to Sun's new Blade servers), Sun Management Center software, SNMP support, and easy-to-use provisioning and patch management software through Solaris OS.

Lights out, costs down

Sun's Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) builds on the best aspects of Remote System Control (RSC) and LOMLite 2 deployed in other servers to give enhanced features and Ethernet access.

Automatic System Recovery (ASR)

The system provides for automatic system recovery (ASR) from component failures in memory modules and PCI cards. The ASR features allow the system to resume operation after experiencing certain non-fatal hardware faults or failures. Automatic self-test features enable the system to detect failed hardware components and an auto-configuring capability designed into the system’s boot firmware allows the system to deconfigure failed components and restore system operation. As long as the system is capable of operating without the failed component, the ASR feature allows the system to reboot automatically, without operator intervention.

World-class services

Whether it's a entry Sun Fire V245 server or a multimillion-dollar Sun Fire 25K server, you're supported by Sun's world-class services organization.

Consistency through familiarity

Sun Fire V245 servers help you leverage your staff's SPARC/Solaris OS expertise to administer the servers.

Savings and Investment Protection

Value designed in

These systems come with binary and application compatibility through an end-to-end SPARC/Solaris architecture, which increases operational efficiency while eliminating costs for application porting. In addition, Sun engineering consistently adds value through the volume systems products line, such as front-to-back cooling, integrated remote management features, rack optimization, and hot-swappable components.

Web server software included

Sun Java Enterprise System Software is pre-loaded for a 90 day free trial of Sun's complete, reliable, and secure Web server solution.

Sun Upgrade Advantage Program

Receive up to 20 percent off when you trade-in an older UltraSPARC system for a new Sun Fire V125, V215, V245, or V445 server. Sun's Trade-in Program can really make your budget go a long way and help you upgrade your hardware sooner.

RoHS compliance is eco-responsible

Sun Fire V245 servers are RoHS-compliant to assure a safer and easier end-of-life recycling and disposal, better for a green planet.

Greener energy efficiency

The incentives and rewards of going green, from the server up, are growing daily. We're proud to say the Sun Fire Solaris workgroup servers use up to 23 percent less energy than competitive servers from HP and IBM. When used in the data center, they can save you a lot on the monthly power bill. Of course, less power consumption also means less component heat, which reduces cooling requirements and improves reliability. Everybody wins.

Available as a Sun System Pack

Sun System Pack

The Sun Fire V245 server is available as a Sun System Pack, which combines the server with the right services as one offering, enabling customers to yield the most value from their IT assets. Sun System Packs offer significant value advantages over traditional warranty plans by delivering higher value services, such as better service coverage, automatic OS updates and trainingcredits, which enable customers to accelerate performance from day one. The predictable, transparent pricing for Sun System Packs is less than purchasing the server and services individually, and in some cases the the Sun System Pack costs less than the basic warranty.
