Added Value through Higher Performance

Processing muscle

You can specify two to four 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors for your systems. Because of its scalable processing capacity, the Sun Fire V445 server is targeted at Tier 1 and Tier 2 applications like web servers, media streaming, caching, security, and application servers. The Sun Fire V445 can even function as a Tier 3 server for small to moderate-sized database and application servers. The architecture and design of the server provides an extremely powerful and well-balanced system to eliminate bottlenecks and maintain service availability.

Faster than its predecessor: Enhanced I/O

With its four PCI-X slots and four all-new PCIe slots, in addition to the SAS-based disk subsystem, the Sun Fire V445 server can eliminate a lot of peripheral controller contention, maximizing throughput.

Add capacity by running applications faster

On average, the Sun Fire Solaris workgroup servers deliver up to 18 percent application acceleration using the latest I/O technologies for higher throughput. The new addition of PCI Express ports provide the raw I/O speed that today's applications need to perform at their full potential. The end result is faster applications with fewer servers, which saves money, space, and energy.

Lots of memory and smart controller

The Sun Fire V445 server uses industry-standard DDR1 memory DIMMs to deliver up to 32 MB of memory, which is shared by all of the processors in the system. Each of the four CPU modules in a Sun Fire V445 system can contain up to four DIMMs. System main memory is provided by up to 16 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB DIMMs.

A faster system bus

The system JBus is the main interconnect for the Sun Fire V445 server. It joins two to four UltraSPARC IIIi CPUs with the I/O subsystem. The system JBus operates at 200 MHz with a 128-bit shared address and data path between each of the JBus devices.

Storage capacity plus

The Sun Fire V445 server includes a disk backplane that accommodates eight low-profile, 2.5-inch, 10.000-rpm, 73 GB, SAS, hot-plug disks capable of data transfer rates of up to 320 MB/sec. The Sun Fire V445 server uses an intelligent controller to provide hardware RAID 0 and 1.

Improved Availability

Higher availability through reliability is here

The Sun Fire V445 server provides higher availability than the Sun Fire V440 server. Its documented availability boost comes from a combination of new PCI I/O capabilities, four (N+2 redundant) power supplies, hot-swap fans, hot-plug disks, and the data protection choices of hardware RAID 0 and 1. As a result, the Sun Fire V445 can provide continuous availability with just three minutes of planned downtime per year.

Network Connectivity

Gigabit Ethernet

With four on-board RJ45 10/100/1000Base-T (Copper) Gigabit Fast Ethernet ports for high throughput, the Sun Fire V445's networking capabilities give you a lot of powerful, fast choices. Also included are one asynchronous RJ45 serial communication port (not POSIX compliant) and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface, which provides Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) access for control of the server, including power switching and on-board processor access.

Save on I/O

Four integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports let you avoid the expense of purchasing and installing PCI cards to get Gigabit Ethernet functionality.

USB choices

For additional connectivity options, you get four USB 2.0 ports, two in the front, two in the rear.

Simplified System Management

Cradle-to-grave management support

Sun Fire V445 servers come with integrated Advanced Lights Out Manager (common to Sun's new Blade servers), Sun Management Center software, SNMP support, and easy-to-use provisioning and patch management software through Solaris OS.

Lights out, costs down

Sun's Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) builds on the best aspects of Remote System Control (RSC) and LOMLite 2 deployed in other servers to give enhanced features and Ethernet access.

Automatic System Recovery (ASR)

The system provides for automatic system recovery (ASR) from component failures in memory modules and PCI cards. The ASR features allow the system to resume operation after experiencing certain non-fatal hardware faults or failures. Automatic self-test features enable the system to detect failed hardware components and an auto-configuring capability designed into the system's boot firmware allows the system to deconfigure failed components and restore system operation. As long as the system is capable of operating without the failed component, the ASR feature allows the system to reboot automatically, without operator intervention.

World-class services

Whether it's a entry Sun Fire V445 server or a multimillion-dollar Sun Fire 25K server, you're supported by Sun’s world-class services organization.

Savings and Investment Protection

Value designed in

These systems come with binary and application compatibility through an end-to-end SPARC/Solaris architecture, which increases operational efficiency while eliminating costs for application porting. In addition, Sun engineering consistently adds value through the volume systems products line, such as front-to-back cooling, integrated remote management features, rack optimization, and hot-swappable components.

Web server software included

Sun Java Enterprise System Software is pre-loaded for a 90 day free trial of Sun's complete, reliable, and secure Web server solution.

Sun Upgrade Advantage Program

Receive up to 20 percent off when you trade-in an older UltraSPARC system for a new Sun Fire V125, V215, V245, or V445 server. Sun's Trade-in Program can really make your budget go a long way and help you upgrade your hardware sooner.

RoHS compliance

Sun Fire V445 servers conform with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive (2002/95/EC) for the European Community. As with comparable servers from other manufacturers, these systems do use the exemption for lead-based solder, RoHS-5.

Greener energy efficiency

The incentives and rewards of going green, from the server up, are growing daily. We're proud to say the Sun Fire Solaris workgroup servers use up to 23 percent less energy than competitive servers from HP and IBM. When used in the data center, they can save you a lot on the monthly power bill. Of course, less power consumption also means less component heat, which reduces cooling requirements and improves reliability. Everybody wins.

More ways to save

The Sun Fire V445 server offers five clear value propositions for entry-level customers. How many of these advantages can you benefit from?

  • Low solution costs: The Sun Fire V445 server's support for the reliable and secure Solaris software provides a range of low-cost solutions for horizontal scalability.
  • A low-priced, four-way server: The Sun Fire V445 server is priced to beat competitive Lintel, Wintel, and UNIX four-way rack-optimized servers.
  • Low Total Cost of Ownership: Start with a low purchase price and add SPARC/Solaris binary compatibility across existing applications to net out at a very low TCO.
  • Competitive price/performance: The Sun Fire V445 server with the UltraSPARC IIIi processor is designed for low-cost computing.
  • Reduced Cost and Complexity: Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) gives you the advantage of remote management functionality, reducing your onsite staff requirement. The Socketed System Configuration Chip (SSCC) improves system availability by enabling a fast return to service in the unlikely event of a failure.

Available as a Sun System Pack

Sun System Pack

The Sun Fire V445 server is available as a Sun System Pack, which combines the server with the right services as one offering, enabling customers to yield the most value from their IT assets. Sun System Packs offer significant value advantages over traditional warranty plans by delivering higher value services, such as better service coverage, automatic OS updates and training credits, which enable customers to accelerate performance from day one. The predictable, transparent pricing for Sun System Packs is less than purchasing the server and services individually, and in some cases it costs less than the basic warranty.
