Specifications

The External I/O Expansion Unit consists of a network of switches, bridges, and controllers to provide high-performance I/O data communication, along with system control information, via the PCIe link card connection to the host server. As a compact 4RU I/O expansion unit, it lets you scale your I/O using available rack space.

Expansion Capacity
  • Chassis will accept and operate up to 2 I/O boats for a maximum of 12 expansion slots
  • I/O boats providing 6 expansion slots are offered in either 6PCIe (x8 lane) or PCI-X versions
  • Each I/O boat includes 6 card carriers (plus 1 Link carrier) already installed
  • Card carriers allow for all PCIe or PCI-X card form factors to be installed in the I/O boat
  • Both I/O boats are intended to expand the PCIe or PCI-X capacity of a single server.

Link to Host
  • Host server management & control is established via PCIe link cards mounted in both host server and special reserved slot (slot 0) in each IO boat
  • Link cards are either copper (M4000, M5000, and T-Series only, 4m cable length) or fiber optic (M4000, M5000 or M8000, M9000, 10 or 25m optical fiber length)
  • Link cards are hot pluggable and utilize sideband communication in conjunction with expansion port I/O traffic
  • Link card connections are easily established with server in minutes, then expansion slots are available as though they were internal to the host server.
