Sun's Midrange Server with FlashFire Technology Delivers Record Performance on Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise Payroll 9.0

The Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 server, equipped with four SPARC 64 VII 2.53 GHz processors, achieved world record performance on this popular human capital management (HCM) application benchmark using Oracle Database 11g running on the Solaris 10 OS. The high-performance, high-density Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array enabled the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 server to produce a world record result on this HCM benchmark by dramatically improving I/O performance with up to10x better latency compared to traditional fibre channel (FC) disks while supporting the server in processing 250,000 employee payroll checks.

The PeopleSoft Enterprise 9.0 Payroll (North America) benchmark represents typical OLTP workloads for a large organization processing employee payroll. The application calculates gross to net earnings, deductions and taxes, and is fully integrated with other Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise products, allowing for coordination of a wide range of salary, reward and expense payments.

Benchmark Outcome

  • The SPARC Enterprise M4000 server with four 2.53GHz SPARC64 VII processors and a Sun Storage F5100 flash array processed 250,000 employee payroll checks using PeopleSoft Enterprise Payroll 9.0 with four different execution strategies with an average CPU utilization of only 25 percent.
  • The SPARC Enterprise M4000 server combined with Sun FlashFire technology processed eight sequential jobs and single run control with a total time of 527.85 minutes and demonstrated a speedup of 81 percent going from 1 to 8 streams on the PeopleSoft Enterprise Payroll 9.0 benchmark using the Oracle Database 11g.
  • The Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array is a solid state flash array which provides significant I/O performance boost and has a read latency of only 0.5 msec. As evident from previous results measured on this benchmark, this is about 10 times better latency than optimized storage configuration of over 60 FC disks can deliver.
