Features and Benefits

The Sun Netra T5220 server is ideal for network applications where throughput, power, cooling, and space are key issues. It harnesses the power of the UltraSPARC T2 processor, which delivers up to eight cores and 64 simultaneous execution threads. Each core has its own floating point unit (FPU). Cryptography and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) are built into the chip. All of this in a compact, carrier-grade, rack-optimized, 2RU 20-inch deep enclosure. In short: Expect massive consolidation and virtualization benefits.

Key Benefits

  • Optimize datacenter throughput, density, and power consumption in a NEBS certified server
  • Virtualize hundreds of old servers to cut costs and improve performance
  • Improve uptime through integrated on-chip functions

Performance and Efficiency

The new top of the line

If you liked the Sun Netra T2000 server with the 32-threaded/four-core Sun UltraSPARC T1 processor, you're going to love the new Sun Netra T5220 server. Think of T2, "T2," as in "times two." You now get 64 threads and eight cores, plus eight floating-point units, plus onboard cryptographic processing and 10 Gigabit Ethernet on-chip. All ruggedized and Telcordia NEBS Level 3 certified. It's roughly twice the server, but in the same 2RU size. It's also the industry's new top performer for high-performance workloads, and its nearest competitor is its predecessor.

Density starts at the processor

The UltraSPARC T2 is the industry's first processor to integrate the key functions of multiple systems—processing, networking, security, floating point units, accelerated memory access, and virtualization—on chip. As these formerly separate components are integrated in silicon, costs shrink and performance improves. Reliability and energy efficiency jump up too. Suddenly, your component count drops and floor space becomes available. Compute density is up. And as a bonus, a single-socket processor with this much throughput can really save on by-socket software licenses, such as Oracle.

Netra quality designed in

The Sun Netra T5220 server gives you low-cost expandability and I/O performance with six PCI slots and four Ethernet interfaces. As with most Sun servers, it features redundant power supplies, hot-pluggable disk drives, and support for hardware RAID (0 and 1), and Sun's Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) for remote management and administration. And like all Sun Netra rackmount servers, its ruggedized design and enclosure reduce downtime in rough environmental conditions.

Virtualization and Value

The ultimate virtualization engine

Virtualization and consolidation are perhaps the most significant trends in the datacenter today. The massively threaded UltraSPARC T2 processor gives you more consolidation and virtualization flexibility than any processor in its class. It also takes full advantage of the virtualization capabilities in the Solaris operating system, Solaris Containers, and Sun Logical Domains (LDoms). Now, the new Sun Netra T5220 server and Solaris 10 can really take your NEBS-quality datacenter to the next level.

The most capable OS for today's datacenter, included

The Sun Netra T5220 server runs the pre-installed, fully licensed Solaris 10 Operating System. It's the most advanced OS on the planet, and it's a key part in this system's virtualization capabilities, working in conjunction with the UltraSPARC T2 processor's features.
