Features and Benefits
Our Netra line of servers is distinguished by its NEBS Level 3
certification for rugged and hazardous duty, especially in
telecommunications. Here's the first Netra server with AMD
Opteron-powered x64 processing. Better yet, it gives you a long,
efficient growth path based on AMD's Opteron Dual-Core or Quad-Core
processors. It's an x64 score for our rugged-server customers.
Key Benefits
- Sun Netra quality and reliability for harsh environments
- Exceptional performance derived from Dual-Core and Quad Core AMD Opteron
processors
- Accelerates Solaris, Linux, and Windows applications
- Exceptional expandability and I/O performance
- DDR2 memory, four Ethernet ports, four PCI slots

Performance with a Growth Path
Next-Generation AMD Opteron processors in a Netra box
The new Sun Netra X4200 M2 server is powered by one or two Dual-Core AMD
Opteron processors, model 2214 HE embedded version or Quad-Core model
23HF HE embedded class. It's a fast, cool, efficient design that
allocates 1MB Level 2 cache and 2 pairs of DIMM slots to each processor
core, and it supports low-power DDR2 memory and AMD's Direct Connect
Architecture and hardware-assisted AMD Virtualization. That's a long
growth path with a lot of punch. It can nearly double your computing
resources without increasing your power or cooling requirements.
Quality with Flexibility
32-bit and 64-bit carrier-grade quality computing
The Sun Netra X4200 M2 server brings a whole new dimension of flexibility to our Netra customers: x64-based computing without compromise. AMD Opteron processing lets you run 32-bit and 64-bit applications. AMD's HyperTransport technology and integrated 128-bit wide DDR2 memory controller give you high-speed processing without bottlenecks. And, you have the flexibility to run x64 Solaris, Linux, and Windows applications on one server. All of this, with the assurance of Sun Netra carrier-grade quality.
I/O to match
Four onboard 10/100/1000-Mbps Ethernet ports give you exceptional I/O performance and reliability through redundancy. Four PCI slots give you external connections for speed (one x8 PCI-E slot) and legacy telco card compatibility (three 133 MHz PCI-X full-height slots).
Part of a complete solution
Optimized for network workloads, the Sun Netra X4200 M2 server handles bandwidth-hungry and floating-point intensive applications with ease. It's a great complement to your Sun Netra X4200 M2 server power if you want to extend your x86 software performance with your choice of operating systems.
Carrier-Quality Reliability
Ruggedized and certified for the challenge
As with other Netra servers, the Sun Netra X4200 M2 is NEBS Level 3 certified and ETSI compliant. Its purpose is to keep your most demanding applications running in your toughest environments. Its well-designed reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features can deliver near-continuous system operation, even when the environment turns bad. That's what our Netra server customers want, and here's what you'll get with the new Sun Netra X4200 M2 server:
- AMD Opteron processors and HyperTransport design require fewer components and deliver higher reliability
- ECC memory with ChipKill
- Up to two hot-pluggable hard drives with DVD or up to four hot-pluggable hard drives with no DVD
- Hardware RAID (0 + 1) striping and mirroring onboard
- Two redundant, hot-swappable AC or DC power supplies
- Built-in quad Gigabit Ethernet ports for redundancy
- Environmental monitoring
- Easy access for most component replacements
- Dry Contact Alarms enable Telco operators to use a relay to signal fault conditions to a rack or control room panel as well as an alarm monitoring system
Simple, convenient, powerful management
Sun's Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM) comes with the Sun Netra X4200 M2 server. It simplifies remote monitoring and management from anywhere on the network. ILOM lets you power cycle, setup, manage, monitor and maintain systems by both local and remote management, including remote KVM and media connectivity. For reliability, it runs on an independently powered Service Processor within the system. ILOM also provides industry standard GUI and CLI interfaces, IPMI 2.0 and SNMP V1, V2c, V3 support.
Why NEBS certification?
NEBS is the Network Equipment Building Standard, a stringent specification for durability, grounding cables, and hardware interfaces specified by Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore). It's designed for equipment used in Telco central offices, even in earthquake Zone 4 environments. The 2RU Sun Netra X4200 M2 server passes the NEBS Level 3 certification requirements. It's also what we call a "carrier-grade" server. Carrier grade is characterized by ruggedized, rack-mountable systems with enhanced features such as remote alarm capabilities, front-back cooling, front accessibility of media, rear cabling, and NEBS-compliant packaging. If you're installing servers in areas with temperature fluctuations, humidity, vibration, pollutants, and electrical hazards, you want NEBS Level 3 certified equipment.
