General QuestionsQ: What are OpenSolaris Subscriptions?
A:
OpenSolaris Subscriptions cover OpenSolaris running on Sun or third-party systems listed on the OpenSolaris Hardware Compatibility List.
Q: What updates do you get with an OpenSolaris Subscription?
A:
With OpenSolaris Subscription, you get access to package updates as they are made available, as well as the technical support based on the level you choose.
Q: Will a OpenSolaris usage license be associated with a physical system or be freestanding?
A:
Both. For OpenSolaris Subscriptions, they will be entitled and associated with a physical system and the hardware system serial number. OpenSolaris licenses are freestanding.
Q: If you download OpenSolaris, but do not purchase an OpenSolaris Subscription, what can you receive?
A:
You can download OpenSolaris and receive package updates via the community but you are not entitled to any support from Sun nor will you
have access to the package updates from the Support Repository.
Q: Will OpenSolaris follow the same support life cycle as Solaris?
A:
No, however, Sun will provide support for 5 years from the date of general availability. Please visit the OpenSolaris EOSL page for full details on the life cycle for OpenSolaris.
Q: How do you order OpenSolaris Subscriptions?
A:
You can order support through your Sun sales representative or you can choose which OpenSolaris Subscription best meets your needs and then buy online.
Q: I have multiple systems running OpenSolaris, how many subscriptions do I need?
A:
A separate OpenSolaris Subscription is required for every system to which you apply Package Updates from the Support Repository. You must have either a Sun System Service Plan or an OpenSolaris Subscription under contract for each system.
Q: What if I already has a valid Sun System Service Plan for Solaris and want to migrate to OpenSolaris vs. Solaris as my OS?
A:
No problem. You can deploy either Solaris 10 or OpenSolaris on your existing contract and get the same level of support you need. Please note, you must choose either Solaris or OpenSolaris as the OS you want supported; you cannot run both simultaneously and have them both supported.
Q: Does Sun offer OpenSolaris Developer support for OpenSolaris?
A:
Developer support options are available for code support, programming and technical assistance. Recognized industry-wide, Sun offers OpenSolaris support via our Developer Expert Assistance.

Customer Quote"The level of enterprise customer service support that comes with Sun is exponentially better than what you get with other open source products and solutions. When you compare Sun with vendors such as Red Hat or Novell in the platform space, the difference is like night and day."
