Corporate Responsibility

Workplace

At Sun, eco responsibility is embedded into every aspect of our operations, including where our employees work and how they commute. We also lead a range of resource conservation, waste reduction, and recycling programs, and we strive to bring our philosophy of openness and transparency to these efforts by reporting on our environmental impact.

Embracing an Open Work Concept

The Sun Open Work program combines innovative technologies, tools, and support processes that enable Sun employees to work effectively anywhere, anytime, using any device. This type of work environment reduces the importance of the traditional assigned office and instead provides flexible workspaces that are widely distributed, conveniently located, and shared by many, as well as the option to work from home.

Through this program, more than 17,000 employees around the world work from home or in a flexible office up to two days a week. This represents close to 55 percent of Sun's employee population.

By providing the technology and financial support that gives our employees the flexibility to work from home — or closer to home — Sun is contributing to a better quality of life for our employees, in addition to realizing significant cost savings and positive environmental benefits.

Sun Open Work Program Participants Experience Higher Job Satisfaction Levels

  • 78 percent worldwide satisfaction ratings in fiscal year 2006.
  • Work-from-home employees are more satisfied with their compensation than are office-assigned employees.
  • 85 percent of flexible employees would recommend Sun to others.
  • Work-from-home employees rate their managers higher than do employees who are office-assigned.
