General QuestionsQ: What is happening to Patch Manager 2.0?
A:
Sun has released a new version of SunSM Connection Update Manager software that supports the SolarisTM 8 and Solaris 9 OS. Customers who use Patch Manager 2.0 will need to install this new software to continue to access the latest updates and patches from Sun per their support contracts.
Sun Connection, Update Manager keeps Solaris 8, 9 and 10 Operating System users up-to-date by informing them of the latest updates. Using notifications and intelligent needs-based updating, Sun Connection helps improve operational efficiency and helps customers ensure they are working with the latest software updates (patches) for their Sun software. Using the Sun Connection customers can opt for single-system local using the Sun Connection Update Manager or the 'smpatch' command-line utility. In addition on Solaris 10, customers can use the Sun-hosted Web application for multiple-system update. Please reference the Getting Started Instructions for help on installing and registering located here. Q: When will Sun make the changes in Patch Manager 2.0
A:
On August 27, 2007 Patch Manager 2.0 will be decommissioned. Customers will no longer be able to receive the latest updates (patches and features) with Patch Manager 2.0. Customers can still access the latest updates for Solaris 8 and 9 by downloading the latest version of Sun Connection Update Manager.
Q: Do I have to register to get access to Sun updates and tools?
A:
Customers will need to register for an online account and accept the license terms on SunSolve in order to get access to patches which Sun designates as "security fixes" and "hardware drivers" and makes available at no charge. If you do not already have a SunSolve account you can create one here.
Before using Sun Connection you must first register each of the systems you will be managing. You can use the Sun Update Manager application or a command-line registration utility called sconadm. If you want to register your system with the registration wizard, start the Sun Update Manager GUI. The first time you start Sun Update Manager, the registration wizard takes you through the system registration process. Q: What platforms will Sun Update Manager support?
A:
Sun Connection Update Manager is compatible with the following platforms: Solaris 8 SPARCĀ®, Solaris 9 SPARC, Solaris 9 x86, Solaris 10 SPARC, and Solaris 10 x86.

A:

Q: How does the Sun Connection Update Manager work with Solaris Zones software?
A:
Sun Connection provides support for analyzing and patching a Solaris 8, 9 and 10 global zone. Updates installed and removed while logged into the global zone will be applied to the global zone and all applicable non-global zones. At this time installing and removing updates by a non-global zone admin is not yet supported.

A:
The Solaris 10 version of Sun Connection Update Manager will work with the Sun Connection web-hosted edition. At this time Sun does not support the management of updates for Solaris 8 and 9 via the Sun Connection web-hosted edition.
