Sun Applauds Community Efforts Around Jini Technology

COMDEX, Las Vegas, NV, November 17, 1999 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today applauded the increasing community efforts dedicated toward developing and enhancing Jini™ network technology. The community supporting Jini technology, comprised of developers, researchers, start-up companies, individuals and large corporations, has grown to over 20,000 members. Jini technology, based on Java ™ technology, allows digital devices and services to simply connect. Impromptu networks of Jini technology-enabled devices and services can be established easily, allowing instant communication without the devices or services having prior knowledge of each other.

Created to shepherd the development process, the community supporting Jini technology uses the website www.jini.org as its primary communication resource. This virtual community is open to all developers to research and discuss developmental work related to Jini technology. Since it was formed in May 1999, the Community has made significant progress, attracting new members, establishing working groups, forming a community-based Jini technology marketing council and initializing public online voting for Community processes.

One of the guiding instruments for the Community is the Sun Community Source Licensing (SCSL) model. Under the Jini SCSL, members are invited and encouraged to work with the Jini code freely. Members retain their intellectual property (IP) and have the option to contribute their code to the Community. Under this model, a nominal fee is assessed for usage of the Jini logo™ only when the solution is implemented and the product is shipped commercially.

"The Jini Community has experienced tremendous interest and growth over the past few months from developers and companies looking for open solutions to help them capitalize on new opportunities in the networked economy," said Richard Gabriel, distinguished engineer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Recent announcements such as Oracle's Portal-to-Go and Sony's collaboration with Sun to build home gateway technology indicate that the industry is clearly calling for a flexible, dynamic networking solution, such as Jini network technology, to help them meet these demands."

Over the past 10 months the community membership for Jini technology has grown to over 20,000 members. Community members have met twice in the last 6 months to develop principles and processes, and have since initiated online public voting to finalize these items. Additionally, over 35 working groups are collaborating online at www.jini.org to define storage and printer application programming interfaces (APIs), a services user interface (UI), and are creating virtual projects for diverse initiatives such as a Bioinformatics tools, a JiniBridges initiatives, and Music framework. Each project is an effort to take advantage of the unique qualities of Jini technology.

An active list of development projects and industry initiatives called the Lamplighter Resource Bulletin is updated regularly and posted to www.jini.org, and the first full developer conference for Jini technology is being planned for the year 2000.

Also at the request of its members, a marketing advisory board has been created to address issues pertaining to the industry-wide marketing of Jini technology-enabled products and the Jini logo. Sylvia Tidwell Scheuring, President of PersonalGenie, will lead the council.

"Jini technology has fantastic potential to permeate the marketplace, making life easier for customers and manufacturers alike. The goal of the marketing council is to fully realize this potential by spreading a clear, consistent message about what Jini technology is and by spreading the news that a Jini technology-enabled world isn't a dream of the future, but a reality," said Ms. Scheuring.
