SUN DEBUTS SOLARIS 8 OPERATING ENVIRONMENT, THE ONLY OPERATING ENVIRONMENT THAT MARRIES DATACENTER AND DOTCOM REQUIREMENTS

With Free Solaris Source and End-User Binary Programs, Industry's First-of-Its-Kind System Admin Portal and a Wealth of Critical Features, the Solaris 8 Operating Environment Emerges as the Dotcom Operating Environment

NEW YORK -- January 26, 2000 -- Sun Microsystems Inc. today unveiled the Solaris™ 8 Operating Environment, the first to satisfy the convergent requirements of enterprises adapting to the Internet age and of dotcoms adopting the disciplines of the datacenter. Sun also announced free access to the Solaris source and end-user binary code to foster innovation and ubiquity. The Solaris 8 Operating Environment is available for both the SPARC™ and Intel platforms. In addition to the operating system software, the Solaris Operating Environment includes a comprehensive co-package of software from Sun, iPlanet™ E-Commerce Solutions™, Oracle and others. Already the hands-down leader in customer satisfaction, new features in Solaris 8 software drive the five critical requirements for Internet-based systems -- scalability, availability, manageability, security and connectivity -- to new heights. In addition, Sun guarantees application compatibility with earlier versions of the Solaris Operating Environment through verification testing, unlike other operating systems that require major recompiling and recoding. "CEOs tell me that their No. 1 business worry is that the Internet is stressing traditional IT infrastructures. This past holiday season, they saw firsthand how service levels can make or break a dotcom business," said Edward J. Zander, president and COO, Sun Microsystems. "The Solaris 8 Operating Environment delivers service levels that meet the new requirements, while also reducing cost and risk."

Wealth of Features To Support Internet Requirements

Preparing to respond quickly to success on a massive scale is critical on the web. The Solaris 8 Operating Environment delivers new capabilities required to deal with rapid and unpredictable growth, including:
  • Network Cache Accelerator for a fourfold improvement for serving web pages.
  • IPv6 support for a near-infinite number of IP addresses, a number so large that it approaches the number of molecules on the planet. Java HotSpot ™ technology, a feature for delivering the industry's fastest Java 2™ platform performance.
  • A 70 percent improvement in database performance.
  • Integrated iPlanet Directory Server, the industry's leading e-commerce LDAP directory with 70 percent market share. (See related release at www.iplanet.com)
In the Internet economy, up-time requirements demand that the IT infrastructure be available 24x7x365. The Solaris 8 Operating Environment includes new capabilities that support these demanding requirements, including:
  • Clustering, supporting up to four 64-processor systems today and moving to eight later this year.
  • Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration, for reallocating system resources on the fly as demand changes.
  • Expanded hot patching capabilities for modifying the OS kernel of mission-critical systems while the system is running.
  • Live Upgrade for installing and reconfiguring new versions of the OS while the current system is still running.
  • IP multiplexing for support of multiple network connections.
Where traditional IT environments are accustomed to managing hundreds of systems, Internet infrastructures often scale to thousands and beyond. The Solaris 8 Operating Environment meets this challenge with new capabilities, such as:
  • The Sun™ Management Center Technology, which supports management of all Sun systems from a central location.
  • New web-based capabilities that offer quick, easy installation and upgrades of the operating environment across multiple severs from one location.
Security in the Internet world shifts IT requirements; in addition to protecting data, businesses also make it broadly available. Solaris 8 Operating Environment security is rock-solid, with integrated features that put it at the head of competing operating environments. These include:
  • Built-in firewall and fire ridge technologies for creating multiple levels of security.
  • Support for the latest version of Kerberos, which is a key building block for creating single sign-on systems.
  • IP sec, an industry-standard approach for encryption over the network.
  • Role-based access control, a key datacenter feature for setting multiple levels of pemission for system administrators.
The Solaris 8 Operating Environment includes comprehensive features that build on Sun's vision of providing access to the network anywhere, anytime, to anyone, on any device, including:
  • Mobile IP to support IP addresses that follow you anywhere in the world where you have access.
  • Support for key Internet building blocks used to create the service-driven network including XML; Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition; and Network File System.
  • Solaris PC Netlink software for interoperability with Windows systems and networks.

Free Source Code Access and End-User Licenses For Runtime Software

Starting with the Solaris 8 Operating Environment release, Sun will no longer charge an end-user license fee for the right to use the runtime software on systems with eight or fewer processors. This aligns with Sun's strategy of shifting to a fee-based service model. Instead of charging for lines of code, Sun is rolling out a comprehensive set of Solaris 8 service and support programs, delivered through Sun's first-of-its-kind System Administrators Portal at http://www.sun.com/sysadmin.

Additionally, the company is providing free access to Sun's source code to foster innovation and ubiquity.

Co-packaged Software for a Dot-Comprehensive Environment

The Solaris 8 Operating Environment co-packages comprehensive software capabilities for end-user services, web servers, application servers and databases. The comprehensive co-package includes:
  • Sun StarOffice™ office productivity suite.
  • iPlanet Webtop software.
  • iPlanet Web Server software.
  • iPlanet Application Server software.
  • iPlanet Certificate Management System.
  • Apache web server.
  • Oracle8i database.
  • Oracle Migration Workbench - SQL Server migration tool.

Pricing and Availability

While the software and co-packaged code is free, Sun is charging $75 for the cost of media, which includes the Solaris 8 Operating Environment in 10 languages, a Solaris Software Companion CD, and co-packaged software. The Solaris 8 Operating Environment is scheduled to ship in early March; customers can get access to Sun's Solaris 8 source code in 90 days from today, for a $75 media fee. Program details are available at http://www.sun.com/solaris/.

Customers Choosing the Solaris 8 Operating Environment to Run Their Businesses

"Digex provides web and application hosting solutions designed exclusively for businesses that have Internet requirements tied to critical business objectives," said Charles Boyle, director of research and development, Digex Inc. (Nasdaq:DIGX). "Our customers have exponential growth potential and Digex heavily relies on the Solaris Operating Environment's ability to scale from basic web servers to large-scale database servers, to meet their rising service level requirements."

"The instantaneous global reach afforded by the Internet has created significant technological hurdles for eCommerce," said Scott Gilbertson, president, eCommerce, the J.Crew Group Inc. "Sun together with Art Technology Group's Dynamo addresses this problem with the scalability and performance of their products. J. Crew has always been customer-centric, focusing on ease of use, speed and reliability. With Sun, Fort Point Partners and Dynamo, we have confidence that our Internet business can scale to hundreds of millions of dollars per year. In our constant efforts to improve our customers' experience, we are pleased to see that Dynamo is supporting the Solaris 8 Operating Environment." Both customers echo the sentiments of others polled recently in an independent survey. The survey, published in December 1999 by the respected IT trade journal Computerworld, ranked the Solaris Operating Environment highest in customer satisfaction among Sun's competitors.
