The FMA specification provides a standard for communication between applications, services and devices across a heterogeneous network, which will enable developers to easily create solutions for complex distributed environments. The FMA Reference Implementation (RI) source code is freely available for R&D use under the Sun Community Source License (SCSL). "The FMA Specification sets the stage for advanced, intelligent management of distributed network devices and applications," said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing for Sun Network Storage. "Applying this technology to the complex world of storage networks will enable quick development of interoperable management solutions that allow customers to easily manage heterogeneous networks." The FMA Specification defines a dynamic services model where management services freely interact anywhere on a network. It also defines basic management services such as events, logging, lookup, scheduling and transactions using common programming interfaces. The FMA RI has passed the specification compatibility test suite (CTS), certifying that it follows the FMA Specification and illustrating that the advanced technology in the specification works. The FMA Specification was created in an open review environment under the Java Community Process (JCP) program by an expert group made up of storage industry leaders. FMA expert group members include Ancor Communications, Exabyte, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Hitachi LTD. subsidiaries, Legato Systems, Quantum, StorageTek, Sun Microsystems and VERITAS Software. Concurrent with the arrival of the final FMA Specification, Sun Microsystems today announced immediate availability of the first Jiro™ Technology Developer's Release, which is based on the FMA Specification.
