The campus will serve as the worldwide headquarters, offering employees the latest in innovative technology and amenities, while essentially becoming the center of Sun's world for meeting and exchanging ideas. Sun will be celebrating the opening of its campus today with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by state dignitaries, community organization leaders and Sun executives, gathered to honor the past and celebrate the future in Santa Clara. Sun's new campus is at the corner of Montague and Lafayette in Santa Clara situated on 82.5 acres of the former Agnews West Developmental Center. As Sun's dramatic growth rate continues, Sun is expanding its presence in Silicon Valley with this one million square foot R&D campus for 3,600 employees. By officially locating Sun's headquarters at the new facility, slated for 2001, Sun will be able to centralize interaction with guests and visitors as well as employees and partners from around the world. "This incredible new campus supports Sun's vision to be an innovative leader in technology and a leader in providing a progressive work environment," said Scott McNealy, Chief Executive Officer of Sun Microsystems. "We take an enormous amount of pride in being able to complete a project of this magnitude. A project that leads the way for collaboration between companies and the communities in which they operate." Sun's new facility combines preservation carefully balanced with innovative technology. The campus was designed around the historic Agnews Park integrating renovated and preserved landmarks with modern technology and equipment. Sun is making some of its facilities open to the community, far surpassing what was previously available. Sun and Santa Clara worked cooperatively to develop this project. Sun worked with the city of Santa Clara and the state of California to develop a campus not only for its employees and its singular corporate needs, but also for the needs of the public and several non-profit agencies previously occupying the site. Through a unique arrangement with the city of Santa Clara, Sun helped add the Agnews Historic Park, a 14-acre public park including four historic buildings, to the city's park system. Sun will fully maintain the park at no cost to the City. "With this new campus, Sun continues to expand its operations with facilities throughout the Silicon Valley and around the world," said Bill Agnello, senior vice president of real estate and the workplace at Sun Microsystems. "This project has allowed us to build strong ties to the local community due to the unique partnership model that Sun has fostered with the city of Santa Clara." In addition to the restoration and environment components of the project, Sun also embarked on supporting community organizations in Santa Clara. Among the organizations associated with the development of the Santa Clara campus that have received funding from Sun include The Martinson Child Development Center, Emergency Housing Consortium, Agnews Developmental Center, Four Cottages, Police Athletic League, Emergency Training Consortium, Hope Rehabilitation Services, Santa Clara Unified School district, and Santa Clara City's Park and Recreations services.
