SUN AND LEADING TELECOM COMPANIES ANNOUNCE SIGNING OF AGREEMENT FOR OSS THROUGH JAVA INITIATIVE
SUN AND LEADING TELECOM COMPANIES ANNOUNCE SIGNING OF AGREEMENT FOR OSS THROUGH JAVA INITIATIVE
First Focus is on Java Technology APIs for 3G Wireless Service
Activation, Trouble Ticket and Quality of Service
CHICAGO, IL -- November 13, 2000 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:
SUNW), and leading telecom companies, Cisco Systems, Inc., Ericsson,
Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Nortel Networks, and Telcordia Technologies,
Inc., today announced at the TeleManagement World, that they have
signed an agreement to work together on the OSS through Java
Initiative. This is a new industry process to define and implement
Java technology-based APIs (Java APIs) for Operations Support Systems
(OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS). ADC Telecommunications,
Crosskeys, Cygent, Infovista, Objective Systems Integrators, and
Remedy are already participating with the founding members of this
Initiative, adding resources to the work in progress in their
specific areas of expertise.
The initial focus of the Initiative will be to address the
application areas of Trouble Ticket, Quality of Service and Service
Activation for 3G wireless networks. Innovative OSS solutions are
needed for 3G wireless networks in order to operate new applications
supporting both voice and data, and delivering end-to-end services.
The OSS through Java Initiative is designed to accelerate the
development of new OSS components. By complying with standard APIs,
these new components should be easier to integrate faster with new
network equipment, as well as between each other to facilitate rapid
rollout of 3G networks and services.
Under the Initiative, the development of demonstration systems is
planned, to prove the ability of the APIs and to demonstrate the
applicability of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology for
OSS solution integration. Leveraging the success already provided by
J2EE technology in the areas of enterprise and e-commerce, can help
service providers to jumpstart the deployment of seamless OSS systems
in which all applications function together. Currently service
providers face a fragmented OSS market, filled with proprietary
systems that cannot function together without costly integration
work.
The members of the Initiative are investing core expertise and
resources, and have formed three teams to produce open Java
Technology APIs for Trouble Ticket, Quality of Service and Service
Activation. The OSS APIs in each area are now being standardized
under the latest Java Community Process (JCP) program, which has
already been successfully used to create technologies like J2EE,
JDBC API or Java Messaging Service. The OSS through Java
Initiative is geared to bring to the fragmented OSS/BSS market the
same convergence that such technologies have already brought to their
respective industries.
The Java Specification Requests have already been approved by the JCP
Executive Committee for Trouble Ticket, Quality of Service and
Service Activation. Three Expert Groups are currently being created,
and the industry is now devoting even more expertise and energy into
this effort, via these groups.
The JCP deliverables for each application area will consist of a
specification, a reference implementation, and a technology
compatibility kit. The members of the Initiative intend to make all
these deliverables, including source code, freely available to the
market. In addition, the Initiative members intend to demonstrate at
TeleManagement World in Nice, May 2001.
