SUN ANNOUNCES SUN ONE: NEW GENERATION OF SOFTWARE FOR OPEN, SMART, WEB SERVICES

Complete Open Architecture, Roadmap and Product Portfolio Fulfills a Seven Year Sun Vision & Operational Plan

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- February 5, 2001 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (SUNW) today announced the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) -- a new generation of software for open, smart, web services. Sun ONE provides a complete open architecture, roadmap and product portfolio fulfilling Sun's seven-year Service Driven Network vision and an operational plan for simplifying the way in which open web services are created, assembled and deployed across and beyond the Internet. Sun ONE will result in greater productivity and lower costs for businesses, faster time-to-service and increased market opportunity for developers, and an enriched user experience for consumers.

"Smart web services are to the Information Age what interchangeable parts were to the Industrial Age," said Scott McNealy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We're on the brink of an explosion of services that will flourish in this free market and bring simpler, easier, smarter services to every man, woman and child."

The major elements of the announcement today include:

  • The industry's most comprehensive product offerings to create, assemble and deploy web services today, plus roadmaps for the Sun ONE portfolio extending out two years;
  • Breakthrough and extended products, including the Sun ONE Webtop technology developer release and iPlanet Directory, Web, Application, Portal, Commerce and Communication Servers;
  • Specifics of the Sun ONE architecture, based on open standards, which provides a clear and simple set of practices to build and deploy web services today;
  • An operational plan to extend web services to the next level of intelligence based on context - smart web services that can modify their behavior based on identity of the requester, as well as his or her location, timing and permissions.

"We helped take applications to the network when we introduced the Java platform," said McNealy. "We contributed to the creation of XML as the de facto open data format for the network. Now we're going to bring context to web services and make them smarter."

At the heart of the announcements today was a focus on simplicity for developers, businesses and consumers. "You don't have to run a nuclear power plant to use electricity. Likewise, you don't have to know software to access services," added McNealy.

Introducing Sun ONE Products and Technologies

Sun ONE is based on Sun's extensive experience in meeting the needs of major global enterprises and provides developers with an immediate opportunity to create open, reliable, scalable web services. Sun ONE comprises a development environment, application and technology building blocks and an infrastructure platform that provides the most complete product offering on the market today for the creation, assembly and deployment of these web services.

"We have already demonstrated our leadership by providing the infrastructure for the great Internet build-out," said Ed Zander, President and Chief Operating Officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "With a $3 billion investment in software and over 10,000 employees dedicated to software development and support, Sun ONE provides software developers and customers the best technology and products to be competitive on the Net."

Sun ONE Flexible Development Environment Provides Best "Time to Service"

The Sun ONE Forte for Java software and Sun ONE iPlanet Process Manager products are flexible and intuitive service creation tools which allow developers and business professionals to build basic components, assemble services from these and existing pre-packaged applications, link together already-published services and deploy them quickly to modern clients in a personalized way. The Sun ONE tools roadmap shows a commitment and investment to continually provide and enhance a complete robust set of developer tools for smart web services. This is backed by extensive support for the community of web service creators through the Sun Dot-Com Builder and Sun Developer Essentials programs.

Breakthrough Sun ONE Application & Technology Building Blocks Provide Better Business Productivity

The Sun ONE products provide one of the first set of application building blocks designed to immediately transform traditional business and office productivity applications into collaborative open web services and offer a path to develop them into smart web services by integrating them with commerce and communications applications.

The Sun ONE Webtop, developer release 1.0, is a groundbreaking technology that will change the way service providers deliver office productivity applications as services and will provide them with the ability to deliver a branded, customized webtop to their customers on any device from a PC to a cell phone. The Sun ONE Webtop changes every web browser from "read only" to "read and write."

The Sun ONE iPlanet Commerce Solutions is the industry's only integrated solution for buying, billing, selling and securely trading online. The iPlanet Commerce Solution solves the daunting task of integrating e-procurement, selling and billing point products into a comprehensive, powerful and flexible platform. It is the only platform with integrated and interoperable Internet bill/invoice presentment and payment along with secure identity. The platform features the new iPlanet MarketMaker, the industry's first platform for open digital marketplaces.

The Sun ONE iPlanet Communications Solution, features the service provider industry's leading email, calendar and wireless solutions. Sun today demonstrated the capability of secure, enterprise instant messaging to link the Internet and corporate intranets for seamless conversation across all business functions.

Sun ONE Provides a Reliable, Scalable, Infrastructure Platform

The Sun ONE infrastructure product portfolio is based on some of the most widely-adopted products and technologies in the industry that are truly suitable to provide the quality of service, portability, security, openness and dynamic provisioning required to safely migrate to the web services and new smart services model. These products and technologies include the following:

  • eXtensible Markup Language (XML), co-invented by Sun engineer, Jon Bosak, has become the de-facto open document and data exchange format for the web services age.
  • The Java platform, which after five years has proven itself the de-facto standard for developing and deploying applications and services to any network-connected device. EJB components are the "service container" for creating web services while JavaServer Pages software provides web authors the ability to easily extend that business logic to any device.
  • All three editions of the Java platform and all iPlanet products support XML and Sun is committed to its integration in future releases. Together, the Java platform and XML form the heart of web services.
  • The iPlanet Directory Server is one of the undisputed leaders for scalable, reliable and secure Internet and enterprise user management services, with more than 330 million seats sold today. In beta today, version 5.0 has been deployed at some of the world's largest customer sites and will be available in general release later this quarter. Customers will have virtually unlimited scalability through a new architecture, improved read/write performance, through transaction based applications and services and improved service availability through multi-master replication.
  • iPlanet Application and Web Server products were recently recognized by Forrester Research as the industry's highest performing and most reliable in their class. They support delivery of smart web services via open interfaces built on top of J2EE and XML technologies, while leveraging existing investments in information assets. By embracing open standards provided through our products, customers are assured of interoperability with third-party technologies and systems, thereby decreasing time-to-market and improving IT flexibility.
  • Open interfaces, J2EE, XML and LDAP (Lightweight Access Directory Protocol), leverage existing investments made in various information assets. By embracing open standards provided through the entire line of Sun ONE products, customers are assured of interoperability with third-party technologies and systems, thereby minimizing switching costs, decreasing time-to-market and improving IT flexibility.
  • iPlanet Portal Server software is the fastest revenue growth product in the history of iPlanet. iPlanet demonstrated today the integration of the knowledge management capabilities from its recent GrapeVINE acquisition. With this addition, iPlanet Portal Server software now provides a rich, intelligent, personalized, collaborative approach to knowledge management. Through the use of personal filters and profiles, users can subscribe to be notified of new documents that match their interests within an Intranet, Extranet or Internet environment.
  • Sun's Solaris Operating Environment ("OE") provides the key foundation that will enhance the security, predictability and quality as well as help manage the cost of delivering web and smart web services in the near future. The Solaris OE supports up to 64 processors, eight-way clustering, a 64-bit instruction environment and unique features such as dynamic reconfiguration and reallocation of resources, a global file system and resource, bandwidth and system management. The Solaris OE implements technologies such as IPv6, Mobile IP, IPsec, integrated LDAP directory, network cache acceleration, and with the tight integration with the Java 2 Platform, will keep being at the forefront of operating system offerings.

"We are on the cusp of the next generation of computing where web services are going to gain context awareness and be delivered over multi-enterprise networks - offering businesses with new competitive weapons and users, enhanced experiences," said Daryl Plummer, Group Vice President, Gartner Group. "There is an opportunity to provide a whole new world of platforms, tools, and architecture that could take web services to the next level."
