SUN'S NEW SUN FIRE 4800 SERVER -- FASTEST WEB SERVER ON THE PLANET

Sun Fire 4800 Server Running Solaris Operating Environment, Sun StorEdge Systems, and iPlanet Web Server Sets New World Record in SPECweb99 Benchmark

PALO ALTO, CA. -- April 12, 2001 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced that its new Sun Fire 4800 server has raised the bar for Internet performance. With a record 8,739 simultaneous connections, the SPECweb99 benchmark results indicate that the Sun Fire 4800 system is the fastest web server in the world, demonstrating better performance than both IBM and HP.

The SPECweb99 benchmark is an industry-standard measure of Internet and web server performance, critical in today's modern multi-tiered datacenter. Sun's singular focus on the Solaris Operating Environment to provide superior performance at virtually every tier (web servers, application servers, database servers), is designed to provide consistent manageability that is unmatched by any other vendor solution.

In addition to surpassing the published SPECweb99 benchmark numbers for all vendors, Sun recognizes that performance is only part of the complete solution set customers need to fulfill their IT requirements and help ensure success.

Sun introduced the innovative Sun Fire 4800 midframe server to address high availability requirements, easy manageability, as well as high delivered performance. The new rack-mounted Sun Fire 4800 server delivers mainframe-class availability features never before offered at mid-range price points. These include redundant component interconnection technology, the ability to dynamically split one system into multiple systems, duplicate hardware components, and "on-the-fly" processor upgrades - a capability IBM, HP and Compaq do not deliver in this class of system.

Powered by 12 award-winning UltraSPARC III processors and running the industry-leading Solaris Operating Environment and Sun StorEdge T3 array, the Sun Fire 4800 server with the iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 6.0 software is designed for web services, as well as for running sophisticated e-commerce and general business applications. Over half of the top 25 companies on the Fortune 500 list are Solaris implementations, with the iPlanet Web Server.

The SPECweb99 benchmark is the fourth world-record performance mark set by the new Sun Fire line of servers, announced March 21, 2001.

Sun Fire Servers

The Sun Fire platform holds up to 24 CPUs, 192 GB memory, 4 Dynamic System Domains, 9.6 GB/s sustained I/O bandwidth, and is fully hardware redundant. The foundation of the new Sun Fire systems is breakthrough technology, including the Sun Fireplane interconnect, and a next-generation, balanced system design that delivers mainframe-class functionality at midrange price points.

iPlanet Web Server Software

iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 6.0 software combines industrial strength reliability, performance, and security with the ability to deliver dynamic, personalized content, in an easy-to-manage environment enabling worry-free deployment of e-commerce sites. In addition to setting a new world record in the SPECweb99 benchmark simulation, iPlanet Web Server software helped CNN.COM set a real-world Internet traffic record for scalability. The iPlanet Web Server-powered CNN.COM site recently broke online records as it served up 150 million page impressions and accommodated more than 6.3 million visitors during the 2000 U.S. Presidential Election.

SPECweb99

SPECweb99 is an acknowledged worldwide standard for web server performance evaluation. It represents the number of simultaneous connections the web server can support using the predefined workload.

The SPECweb99 reflects real-world usage simulating accesses to a web service provider, where the server supports home pages for a number of different organizations. As in the real world, certain files within the home page are more popular than others. The workload simulates dynamic operations such as "rotating" advertisements on a web page, customized web page creation, and user registration.

SPECweb99 was developed by SPEC's Open Systems Group (OSG). For further information on SPECweb99, visit http://www.spec.org/osg/web99.
