Sun Microsystems Unveils New Version of Sun Grid Engine Software and Announces New Programs to Enhance Customer Support

LAS VEGAS, NV -- Design Automation Conference -- June 18, 2001 -- Sun Microsystems Inc. announced today that less than one year after launching Sun Grid Engine software, leading design and engineering firms--including Sony and Synopsys--have embraced the powerful distributed resource management (DRM) tool to improve their design cycles and time to market. Sun also used the DAC event to announce new product support programs as well as its latest version of Sun Grid Engine 5.2.3 software, available for free download at http://www.sun.com/software/gridware.

Sun Grid Engine software aggregates available compute resources and delivers compute power as a network service. It is designed to harness idle compute resources, match them to individual job requirements and deliver network-wide compute power to the desktop, thus speeding time to market and changing the economics of technical computing.

The Truth About Computer Resource Utilization Market research has shown that a typical organization uses a mere 15 percent of its available compute resources. Sun Grid Engine software can help boost utilization rates to nearly 100 percent.

"Organizations using Sun Grid Engine software will complete more innovative programs, more quickly, at a lower operating cost. Grid Engine means more compute jobs, more simulations, more refined designs, and more products, all delivered faster," said Robbie Turner, vice president for Client and Technical Market Products of Sun Microsystems. "From cars to electronic circuits, there are all kinds of products that demand application simulations with huge computing requirements. Sun Grid Engine software helps maximize the efficiency of a customer's compute resources, resulting in a faster time to market and an edge over its competitors."

Reducing Time to Market for Design and Engineering Firms

Sony Semiconductors The European division of Sony Semiconductors & Devices, based in the United Kingdom, needed a more flexible compute solution to handle peak demands from its EDA engineers. Sony understood the wasted resources in underutilized processors on the desktop, and knew that software products existed to address these needs. Sony sought to connect more than 80 Sun workstations, and to pool these desktop resources with a centralized compute farm. Using Sun Grid Engine software to find available compute resources in the farm, designers free themselves from this time-wasting task. By increasing efficiency in the design process and harnessing the compute power of the network, Sony improved its time to market and reliability.

"Sony was looking to maximize our existing and new hardware investments, and Sun Grid Engine software allows us to access the combined compute power of the network, from any access point. By pooling unused computer cycles, we no longer have to worry about having a free machine to work on," said Ian Camm, Computer Support Manager for Sony Semiconductor & Devices Europe.

Synopsys

Synopsys, creator of industry-standard electronic design automation tools, was looking for an effective DRM software solution to take advantage of workstations that might sit idle or are otherwise underused. When Synopsys evaluated Sun Grid Engine software, the performance benefits became clear, and these benefits had an impact on the efficiency of the software development model.

"Sun Grid Engine software removes the administrative hassle of finding free resources for compute jobs, so our software engineers can focus on developing software," said Lee Gazlay, group director of software engineering at Synopsys. "Sun Grid Engine software breaks the traditional bottlenecks associated with collaborative workgroups, allowing our organization to be more productive. With these productivity improvements, we're able to run more jobs per given time slot."

Sun Grid Engine Software Continues to Ramp for EDA and Technical Markets

Sun Grid Engine software has been downloaded for use at over 1,000 sites in nearly 90 countries around the globe since its launch in September 2000. In order to keep pace with this explosive interest, Sun continues to build its support and integration mechanisms for the DRM tool.

Sun announced today, for example, that it has teamed with Blackstone Technology Group to provide a wide range of support and consulting services. Sun has also embarked on a specialized training program for its sales and VAR channels to enhance support for Sun Grid Engine software customers worldwide. Called the Grid Computing Certification Program, The courses are expected to lead to highly qualified Sun Certified Grid Computing Specialists who can offer expert installation and support services. And in July, Sun expects to announce its plans to provide the source code of the software to the open source community.

Key Features of Sun Grid Engine software include:

  • Centralized workload management
  • Global workload management strategies including share-based, priority and deadline scheduling
  • Advanced job-queuing and load-balancing
  • Automated policy enforcement
  • Global resource management
