SANTA CLARA, CA -- February 6, 2002 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced the general availability of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) version 1.4, the comprehensive platform for rapidly developing and deploying enterprise-class applications and services across multiple platforms. The latest release of Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition adds new features, and major performance and scalability enhancements that represent a leap forward for Java technology. With version 1.4, enterprises can now use Java technology to develop more demanding business applications with less effort and in less time. J2SE version 1.4 significantly enhances enterprise scalability and performance for Java computing. Developers will experience immediate benefits when migrating existing applications to the latest release of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition. Based on tests using SPECjbb2000 (Java Business Benchmark), the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation's benchmark for gauging server-side Java performance, version 1.4 shows an improvement of 58% over J2SE version 1.3.1. Dramatic improvements have also been made for Java client applications, with Swing-based applets and applications experiencing an average 40% performance boost in GUI responsiveness. "J2SE version 1.4 is a comprehensive offering that enables an entirely new class of scalable, high-performance applications to be deployed on any platform," said Rich Green, vice president and general manager, Java Software, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "With compelling performance results and key new features such as new I/O and 64-bit support, J2SE is the ideal platform for large-scale data mining, business intelligence, engineering and scientific applications." Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 1.4 is fully compatible with earlier J2SE releases and allows developers to build upon their existing Java technology investments while taking advantage of new features and functionalities. Version 1.4 provides enhanced support for industry standards technologies such as SSL, LDAP and CORBA to ensure operability across heterogeneous platforms, systems, and environments. With built-in support for XML, advanced authentication, and a complete set of security services, the latest release provides the foundation for standards-based, interoperable Web applications and services. J2SE version 1.4 combined with the Java Web Services Developer Pack, now available in early access from Sun Microsystems, Inc., enables developers to begin building, testing, and deploying Web services today. Version 1.4 is the complete development environment from which to build rich, interactive applications that can be deployed on any platform. The latest iteration of J2SE advances client application development with new GUI controls, accelerated Java 2D) graphics performance, expanded internationalization and localization support, new deployment options, and expanded support for Windows XP. Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition is the foundation technology for many different styles of software development including client applets and applications, and stand-alone server applications. It is the basis from which Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) technologies are derived and the engine that powers Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) implementations. Version 1.4 is the first J2SE release to be developed through the Java Community Process(JCP) -- an open, community-based process for the development of Java technology specifications, reference implementations and associated technology compatibility kits. In all, 39 companies and industry leaders participated in the development of the J2SE 1.4 platform specification, which included a total of 11 Java Java Specification Requests (JSR). The result of this collaborative effort is a high-quality platform specification that responds to the needs of Java technology developers.
