SUN MICROSYSTEMS BUNDLES MORE VALUE INTO SUB-$1000 SERVER WITH SOFTWARE AND SYSTEM ENHANCEMENTSSUN MICROSYSTEMS BUNDLES MORE VALUE INTO SUB-$1000 SERVER WITH SOFTWARE AND SYSTEM ENHANCEMENTSNew Sun Fire V100 Stands as Industry's Only Sub-$1000 Complete Unix(R) System
SANTA CLARA, CA -- March 18, 2002 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., the undisputed market leader in uniprocessor rack-optimized servers(1), today announced it's adding Web server software and enhancements to its single processor, general purpose server. Introducing the $995 Sun Fire V100 system, Sun is providing a complete, easily managed server with the reliability and scalability of the UltraSPARC(R)/Solaris architecture at or below traditional PC server prices. The rebranded and enhanced Sun Fire V100 server now comes with a CD-ROM drive and Web hosting software that provide a more robust and secure platform -- less vulnerable to viruses or worm attacks. With new hardware and software enhancements, Sun is bundling approximately $3,000 of value into its competitively priced $995 server. The one rack unit high Sun Fire V100 system is pre-installed with the Solaris 8 Operating Environment, rated the No. 1 UNIX operating system by DH Brown(2). Out of the box, customers can also now choose to run the highly scalable and reliable iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.0, including full support for Java applications using JavaServer Pages and Java Servlet technology. The iPlanet Web Server is a key component of Sun ONE, Sun's vision, architecture, platform, and expertise that enables the development and delivery of services on demand. Apache HTTP Server and Sun Chili!Soft ASP software are also included. Sun Chili!Soft ASP software allows customers to easily deploy ASP-based Web sites and applications that traditionally ran on Microsoft Internet Information Web Servers (IIS). Formerly the Netra X1 server, the Sun Fire V100 now joins Sun's UltraSPARC/Solaris, binary compatible Sun Fire server line, bringing the reliability, availability and serviceability of data center servers to a single processor system that is easy to use and administer. The Sun Fire V series now provides general purpose servers ranging from the single processor Sun Fire V100 to the eight-way Sun Fire V880 server. "Sun's lowest priced server just got even more valuable," said Souheil Saliba, senior director of Sun's entry server business. "The Sun Fire V100 is fueling tremendous growth for Sun in the entry server segment because it's ideal for customers who want SPARC/Solaris reliability in an ultra low-cost, thin, rackable server. Its compact size and new features make it the perfect Web server to address space constraints, horizontal scaling, remote management and ease of deployment." Robust Solution at PC Prices Simplifies Management for CustomersThe Sun Fire V100 is well suited for Web infrastructure services such as Web serving, mail and messaging, intrusion detection, directory services (DNS or LDAP), calendaring, streaming media, application development, content distribution, load balancing and file/print. It is also a popular building block in technical compute farms. Raising the bar in manageability and serviceability, the Sun Fire V100 system comes pre-installed with Lights Out Management (LOM). LOM provides remote system management including the following capabilities:
LOM reduces the need for on-site staff, allowing system administrators from a single management point to remotely manage and configure multiple Sun Fire V100 servers. This combination reduces the cost and complexity of doing diagnostic testing on multiple systems. For enhanced system serviceability, all Sun Fire V100 servers also come standard with a System Configuration Card containing the system's identity. The card reduces downtime by enabling customers to quickly and easily transfer key information to a standby server should the original server ever need to go down for maintenance or a parts upgrade. Simply pop the card out of the current server and place it in the standby system. In a matter of moments the standby system will appear on the network as if it were the original unit. The one rack unit high Sun Fire V100 has a variety of benefits, including:
Sun Strengthens Leadership in Entry Server MarketSun continues to thrive in the entry server market. The company's unit sales, when compared to Q400, grew faster than any other major vendor in the sub-$5,000 server market according to Q401 Gartner Dataquest reports(3). Sun also leads the single processor rack-optimized server market with a 31 percent share of unit shipments, beating the nearest competitor by 7 percent, according to IDC reports for Q4CY01. (4) Radianz Selects SunFire V100 System for Price/PerformanceRadianz, an extranet and hosting provider to the global financial community selected Sun Fire V100 systems to power its TIB Message Routing Service, a middleware service that provides ubiquitous routing of TIB messages among multiple customers connected on Radianz' global extranet, RadianzNet. "We required a single processor system that was inexpensive yet powerful and manageable," said Brennan Carley, chief products and technology officer of Radianz. "We can't afford to compromise availability or scalability, and the price and performance of the Sun Fire V100 were a perfect match for our requirements. The systems are up and running fast, and we can take advantage of impressive performance and low cost of ownership, at prices comparable to the earlier Netra X1 systems."
