SUN TURNS UP HEAT ON EIGHT-WAY MARKET; MOVES MARKET-LEADING SUN FIRE V880 SERVER TO 900 MHZ ULTRASPARC III PROCESSORSUN TURNS UP HEAT ON EIGHT-WAY MARKET; MOVES MARKET-LEADING SUN FIRE V880 SERVER TO 900 MHZ ULTRASPARC III PROCESSORFaster Processor Delivers Application Performance Boost; Sets New Eight-Way Performance Levels for SAP-Standard SD Application Benchmark
SANTA CLARA, CA - June 17, 2002 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the availability of the 900 MHz UltraSPARC® III processor for the Sun Fire V880 server, providing a significant performance boost for its market-leading server. With the 900 MHz processor the Sun Fire V880 server sets a new performance level for the SAP-Standard Sales and Distribution (SD) Application benchmark. The Sun Fire V880 server, which rolled out last October as one of Sun's fastest selling servers ever, has made an indelible mark in the high-end entry server market. According to IDC's worldwide server report for the first quarter of 2002, the Sun Fire V880 server continued to shine as the market's #1 eight-way server with sequential growth that more than doubled its unit shipments. "With the move to 900 MHz on the Sun Fire V880 server, Sun is sealing the deal with enterprise business customers, proving that Sun's volume systems products are capable of delivering the enterprise-class features and performance upon which Sun has built its reputation in the high-end at PC server price points," said John Davis, senior director of Volume Systems Products, Sun Microsystems. "Customers should find that the increased processing power can dramatically improve performance for their real world applications, and likewise provide better price/performance for their IT budgets." Faster Sun Fire V880 Server Sets New Eight-Way Performance Level for SAP-SD Standard Application BenchmarkWith the newly announced Sun Fire V880 server configured with 900 MHz UltraSPARC III processors in combination with Sun StorEdge T3 arrays, the system supported 600 SAP-SD benchmark users, 3,020 SAPS, with an average dialog response time of 1.96 seconds and 60,330 order line items per hour. Full details of this new eight-way performance result for the SAP-SD Standard Application Benchmark are available in a related press release at http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2002-06/sunflash.20020617.7.html or http://www.sap.com/benchmark. "These results show a significant price/performance advantage for SAP and Sun customers, which lowers the total cost of ownership of SAP implementations," said Christoph Reisbeck, senior director, SAP Global Alliance, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Intel-based servers using Microsoft SQL are priced significantly higher than the Sun Fire V880 server using IBM's DB2 application, and lack the enterprise-class features and heavy workload capabilities available with Sun's eight-way server. Additionally, these SAP-SD results show much better value per SAPS than comparable systems from HP or Intel."
