SUN IS THE UNIT SHIPMENT LEADER IN THE WORLDWIDE UNIX SERVER MARKET, COMPANY GROWS SEQUENTIAL MARKETSHARE

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- May 30, 2003 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that the company grew its share of the worldwide UNIX+ server market, showing an increase in both factory revenue and unit shipment marketshare on a sequential quarter basis, comparing the fourth quarter of 2002 to the first quarter of 2003, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, which was released today.

In the UNIX market, Sun is the leader in unit shipments worldwide and tied for revenue. Sun gained sequential revenue marketshare in all three UNIX server segments tracked by IDC, according to its new server taxonomy-volume ($0-$25K), midrange enterprise ($25-$500K) and high-end enterprise (over $500K).

In addition:

  • Sun posted the highest sequential marketshare gains, in terms of unit shipments, of the top three UNIX server competitors-including HP and IBM. These gains were bolstered by Sun's new product introductions, including the volume Sun Fire[TM] V120 system to the midrange Sun Fire V1280 servers, which are part of a comprehensive systems portfolio.
  • Sun's worldwide UNIX server unit marketshare is higher than the top three competitors (HP, IBM, Dell) combined.
  • Sun gained UNIX revenue and unit shipment market share in both the U.S. and APAC (Asia/Pacific except Japan), on a sequential quarter basis, compared with Q402.
  • Sun regained the top position in U.S. UNIX servers revenues after a sequential gain of 13 points in marketshare at the expense of the previous leader.

By growing UNIX server units faster than the overall Unix server market, compared to the prior year quarter in both the midrange and high-end enterprise server segments, Sun is demonstrating it is delivering open products with tangible value to the customer. "After a dynamic year, momentum is shifting in favor of Sun," said Larry Singer, Sun's vice president, global information strategy office. "Our renewed investments in lowering customers cost and complexity are paying off. Over the past few months, we've responded to customer requests by delivering low cost solutions that pack enterprise-class functionality and reliability, and we're poised to continue to deliver what the customers need."
