Sun and Sybase Combination Outperforms Competing Systems at 100GB, 300GB and 1000GB (1 Terabyte) Levels By 11, 30 and 50 Percent, Respectively


SANTA CLARA, Calif. - June 24, 2003 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced three record-breaking benchmarks for its Sun Fire systems, further validating its superior price-performance and storage efficiency on the TPC-H benchmark. Benchmark tests of the Sun Fire V240 and V880, Sun StorEdge 3310 array running Sybase IQ 12.5 RDBMS and the Sun ONE platform, were conducted using three different configurations - 100GB, 300GB and 1000GB (1 Terabyte). In all three circumstances, the Sun Fire systems outperformed the previous world record holders in their respective TPC-H categories, including the Dell 6650, the HP Proliant DL760G2 and the HP 9000, yielding the best price-performance, highest storage efficiency and lowest total system cost.

As reported by the Winter Corporation in its just-released white paper titled Demonstrating Efficiency in Large-Scale Data Warehousing, the new TPC-H benchmark results "reveal a compelling value proposition for partnering Sun servers and storage systems with Sybase IQ database software to address large-scale data warehousing needs. The combination yields three primary resource efficiencies - storage efficiency, remarkable I/O efficiency, and laudable query processing efficiency - that together yield unparalleled price-performance and low cost systems that are easier and less expensive to maintain." 100 GB Configuration and Results

The Sun Fire V240, powered by two 1002 MHz UltraSPARC�� IIIi processors, 8 GB of memory, the industry-leading Solaris 9 Operating System (OS) and the Sybase IQ 12.5 RDBMS, achieved a price-performance result of 40US $/QphH@100GB at the lowest total system cost of $45,021. This result is an 11 percent improvement in price-performance over the previous world record of 45US $/QphH@100GB held by the Dell 6650. In addition to price-performance leadership, the Sybase IQ 12.5 and Sun Fire V240 system combination provides reductions in the cost and amount of disk storage needed to support a 100GB data warehouse, requiring only 0.41 TB of storage at a cost of $8,565. Other competitive systems on the market require anywhere from 1.2 TB to 5.6 TB of storage at costs ranging from $36,356 to $568,708.

The Sun Fire V240, powered by two 1002 MHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors, 8 GB of memory, the industry-leading Solaris 9 Operating System (OS) and the Sybase IQ 12.5 RDBMS, achieved a price-performance result of 49US $/QphH@300GB at the lowest total system cost of $50,297. This result is a 30 percent improvement in price-performance over the previous world record of 71US $/QphH@300GB held by the HP Proliant DL760G2. In addition to price-performance leadership, the Sybase IQ 12.5 and Sun Fire V240 combination provides reductions in the cost and amount of disk storage needed to support a 300GB data warehouse, requiring only 0.93 TB of storage at a cost of $12,985. Other competitive systems on the market require anywhere from 3.6 TB to 10.8 TB of storage at costs ranging from $155,458 to $957,268.

The Sun Fire V880, powered by eight 1050 MHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors, 32 GB of memory, the industry-leading Solaris 9 Operating System (OS) and the Sybase IQ 12.5 RDBMS, achieved a price-performance result of 104 US $/QphH@1000GB at the lowest total system cost of $232,206 vs. $5.2 Million on HP 9000. This price-performance result is almost a 50 percent improvement over the previous world record of 203US $/QphH@1000GB held by the HP 9000 Superdome Enterprise. In addition to price-performance leadership, the Sybase IQ 12.5 and Sun Fire V880 system combination provides reductions in the cost and amount of disk storage needed to support a 1TB data warehouse, requiring only 3.7 TB of storage at a cost of about $48,523. Other competitive systems on the market require anywhere from 22.7 TB to 23.3 of storage at costs ranging from $1.1 Million to $3.3 Million.
