SUN MICROSYSTEMS APPOINTS MARISSA PETERSON AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF SUN SERVICES

Peterson to Drive Customer-Focused Solutions as EVP of Services and Worldwide Operations; Retains Role as Sun's Chief Customer Advocate

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. �� March 2, 2004 �� Sun Microsystems, Inc., announced that Marissa Peterson, 42, has been appointed executive vice president for Sun Services. Effective immediately, Peterson will assume this new role in addition to her current responsibilities as chief customer advocate and executive vice president, worldwide operations, Sun Microsystems, Inc. As chief customer advocate, Peterson works across organizational lines to resolve customer satisfaction issues while driving more sustained efforts �� most notably the Sun Sigma program �� to instill a "customer first" ethic throughout the company. As the new executive vice president of Sun Services, Peterson will continue to deliver system solutions and complete life-cycle services to customers.

Peterson joined Sun Microsystems in 1988 and has steadily risen through the ranks over the years. Prior to assuming the position of executive vice president for worldwide operations in February 2001, she served as that organization's vice president for three years, with previous assignments as vice president of worldwide logistics and customer quality and director of manufacturing.

Before joining Sun, Peterson worked as a management consultant at Booz, Allen and Hamilton and in various marketing, financial and engineering positions with Saturn Corporation and various General Motors divisions. She holds a bachelor's of science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University and a Master's in Business Administration from Harvard University.
