SAN FRANCISCO - 2004 JavaOne Conference - June 29, 2004 - The winners of the 2004 Java Community Process JCP Program Awards were unveiled on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 by the JCP Program Management Office (PMO) on behalf of the JCP Executive Committees. The ceremony of the second edition of the JCP Program Awards was held at the JavaOne Developer Conference at the Java Technology Communities in Action event, an assembly of Java technology developers which this year brought together members of the JCP program, Java.net, Jini community program, JXTA technology community and developers at large interested in Java technology. At the same event Java Pro Magazine announced the winners of its technology and community awards.

The JCP Program Awards are presented annually to community participants who had the most significant influence on the community in the past year, demonstrated leadership and exceptional dedication to community development, and proposed and developed Java technologies that had an outstanding impact on the evolution of the Java platform.

This year for the first time the JCP Awards included JCP Member of The Year and Best Spec Lead for each platform group. The JCP program added these new categories to recognize the growing display of excellence in developing innovative Java technologies and outstanding contribution to the community and investment in the JCP.

"We are proud to honor exceptional talent and innovation this year in five award categories," said Rob Gingell, chair of the JCP. "We wanted to be able to reward more of the growing number of creative, innovative and dedicated developers, members of the JCP, who committed their talent and expertise to the development of creative APIs based on the Java software binary standard."

Over the past few weeks, the JCP Executive Committee members and the JCP PMO nominated candidates for the awards. From the pool of nominees they voted one winner in each category. After the polling of the votes, the winners for this year's five categories of JCP Program Awards are:

JCP Member of the Year

• Doug Lea, professor, State University of New York, Oswego

This award recognizes the corporate or individual member who has made the most significant impact on the community in the past year. Leadership, investment in the community and innovation are some of the qualities that EC Members look for in voting for this award.

Outstanding Spec Lead for J2SE/J2EE JSR

• Josh Bloch, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Outstanding Spec Lead for J2ME JSR

• Tolga Capin, Nokia Corporation

These awards recognize those who have demonstrated in the past year exceptional technical savvy, outstanding consensus building skills, effective execution in introducing and leading the most innovative JSRs for Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE)/Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) communities respectively.

Most Innovative JSR for J2SE/J2EE Platforms

• The Groovy Programming Language, JSR 241 - James Strachan, Spec Lead

Most Innovative JSR for J2ME Platform

• Advanced Multimedia Supplements, JSR 234 - Antti Rantalahti, Nokia Corporation, Spec Lead

Innovation is key to the success of technology. These awards recognize the Spec Leads and Expert Groups that have introduced the most innovative new JSRs for the J2SE/J2EE and J2ME Platform communities in the past year.

The JCP ceremony was followed by the Java Pro awards, which recognize the best individual or group contribution to Java technology and the best individual or group contribution to the Java community. The winners are selected by a panel of editors from the independent magazine, a publication of Fawcette Technical Publications. "Presenting the awards, now in their fifth year, during the Java Technology Communities in Action event, instead of in the magazine's own awards ceremony, highlights the significance of Java's expanding yet cohesive community of contributors," according to Kay Keppler, Editor, Java Pro, Fawcette Technical Publications.
