Software Developers Converge at China's Largest-Ever Developer Conference--JavaChina 2005

BEIJING, CHINA -- JAVACHINA 2005 -- September 13, 2005 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), founder and leading advocate of Java technology, today began celebrating Java technology's tenth anniversary at the JavaChina 2005 Developer Conference. Over the next two days, Sun will announce major alliances and new customer wins that underscore how the adoption of Java technology is accelerating in China and helping to fuel economic growth.

"China is in a unique position to leverage Java technology and grow alongside the world's leading centers of software development and innovation," said Scott McNealy, Chairman and CEO, Sun Microsystems. "Today's multibillion-dollar Java economy was built on shared technology and continues to gain momentum through the 4.5 million developers who create new services for the more than 2.5 billion Java platform-enabled devices in use worldwide."

Sun will host nearly 10,000 Java developers and IT professionals during the two-day event in Beijing, as well as reaching out, via satellite broadcast, to eight additional cities throughout China, namely, Chengdu, DaLian, Guanghzou, Hong Kong, NanJing, Shanghai, ShenZhen and Xi'an. James Gosling, widely recognized throughout the world as the 'father of Java' and chief technology officer of the Sun developer products group, will join Scott McNealy in delivering the event's keynote speeches.

Java Technology at the Center of China's Growing Software Industry

Java technology is playing a pivotal role in China's prominence as one of the world's leading software development centers. Over 200,000 Chinese developers are now using Java technology on more types of mobile devices, smart cards, ATMs, thin clients, PCs, servers and mainframes than any other software. JavaChina 2005 is part of Sun's ongoing effort to support China's software developers through education, information and development tools such as the Sun Java Studio Creator application development tool and the open-sourced NetBeans software products.

Here is a summary of announcements made at JavaChina 2005:

  • Bird, one of China's largest mobile phone manufacturers, is working with Sun to integrate Java(TM) ME technology into its advanced line of mobile phones. With assistance from Sun, Bird has set up a Java ME development team to research and develop new Java technology-enabled mobile solutions for China and the global market.

  • Chinese Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI) has chosen to adopt Java ME technology as a middleware specification for China's digital TV standard. CESI selected Java technology for its interoperability, security and widespread adoption and will jointly develop and promote it in China in partnership with Sun. In Europe, Java is already the standard platform for Digital Video Broadcasting. The Advanced Television Systems Committee and CableLabs have also endorsed the Java platform for the US digital TV standard.

  • Eastcompeace Smart Card Co. Ltd, a leading provider of SIM card and smart card solutions in China, has developed a smart card operating system platform based on the Java Card(TM) 2.2.1 technology standard. Called "LongChi", it is an open application platform that allows multiple applications to be deployed on a single card, and enables new ones to be added even after the card has been issued to the end-user.

  • Guangdong Local Taxation Bureau, a leader in tax industry technology for China, is working with Sun to implement a 'one-hundred-percent' Java EE data centralization solution to significantly reduce system maintenance and troubleshooting. Sun Java technology effectively stabilizes the Bureau's system, enabling it to quickly and cost-effectively serve customers of its tax revenue service. The project has become a valuable reference application, demonstrating the power and flexibility of Java technology.

  • Huawei is preparing for the October launch of a 3G mobile phone based on the new Mobile 3D Graphics API for J2ME to provide even richer mobile experiences to end-consumers worldwide. Huawei and Sun have been jointly developing Java technology-based mobile phone software platforms since 2004, already launching U626 and U636 3G terminals based on the Java platform.

  • Motorola has selected Sun for its Java and Solaris (TM) platforms, and SPARC(R) processors in its development of mobility services across converging network technologies. Motorola is continuing to work with Sun and other partners in China to promote mobile Java applications. It is playing a role in the success of China Mobile's innovative M-Box service, through which subscribers access Internet-based services via Java technology-enabled handsets.

  • Nortel's China R&D Center has selected the Sun Java Center of Excellence (JCOE) program to provide professional services and training to its researchers and developers. The JCOE program is helping Nortel employees to enhance their Java development skills and providing advanced knowledge and methodologies to fundamentally improve the in-house software development organization and accelerate the R&D Center's contribution to Nortel's continuing growth.

  • Shanghai Bank has selected Sun to develop its e-banking system and information portal on the Java EE platform and SunFire servers. Sun's systems were selected due to their high--performance and security capabilities, application interoperability and ability to smoothly integrate existing database architecture.

Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) Gains Momentum in China

Indicative of growing support for its Solaris 10 Operating System, Sun also revealed that a number of leading Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) in China have announced migration to the Solaris operating system. These include UFIDA, JIT, KingDee, TongTech, Amarsoft, eBaoTech and Wiscom.

China's Developers Sharpen Their Java Technology Skills

JavaChina 2005 will offer more than 100 workshops, classes and breakout sessions, in addition to code camps and hands-on labs. To meet the wide ranging needs of developers, programmers, educators and other attendees, the conference will be organized around seven themes:
