Hundreds of Global Customers Choose Sun Microsystems in Fiscal Third QuarterSANTA CLARA, Calif. April 25, 2006 During its quarterly earnings call Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) profiled some of the hundreds of new and current customers that chose Sun products in its fiscal third quarter. Demonstrating continued market momentum in core industries such as financial services and telecommunications, customers are rapidly adopting the Solaris10 Operating System (OS), Sun Java Enterprise System, Sun storage products, and Sun's comprehensive line of industry-standard Sun Fire servers.
"As customers turn to the network for competitive advantage and business efficiency, they continue turning to Sun for innovations that truly deliver," said Jonathan Schwartz, CEO and president of Sun Microsystems. "From Solaris 10 to our newest Sun Fire servers, from our newest StorageTek offerings to the ever popular Java platform, the industry is consolidating to a smaller number of platform providers - and we're pleased to have the support of leading customers around the world." Recent customers worldwide that have signed with Sun include: Arcis Corporation Arcis Corporation, a provider of seismic solutions for Canada's energy industry, chose a combination of Sun Microsystems servers and software to address its needs for faster and more effective compute-intensive systems for processing large, structurally complex seismic data volumes. Arcis provides a wide spectrum of 2D and 3D seismic data processing services for domestic and international markets that help customers minimize the risks associated with drilling while reducing exploration and development costs. In February, Arcis implemented a new system consisting of multiple 32 node, Dual-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processor-powered Sun Fire servers running the Solaris 10 OS to make good on its commitment to continually invest in research and development, and state-of-the-art technology. Bank of America Bank of America is committed to using technology to reduce the company's impact on the environment, particularly in the area of energy consumption. It recently added the Sun Fire T2000 server running the Solaris 10 OS as one piece of this commitment. "We at Bank of America are doing our part by selecting environmentally friendly products such as the Sun Fire T2000 server. These servers utilize less space and consume much less energy while delivering significantly improved performance," said Don Obert, chief technology officer, Bank of America. "Taking advantage of this opportunity to do what is right for the environment while at the same time improving our customers' experience is the perfect combination for us." Beijing University Beijing University, one of China's top two academic institutions, purchased Sun Microsystems technologies to provide single sign-on access for its students and staff. Citing Sun's identity management leadership in the education space, Beijing University will implement Sun Java System Identity Manager, running on Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC T1 processors. CD02 London-based CD02 is offering its financial risk simulation software, CDOSheet, as a service to customers via the Sun Grid Compute Utility. With the new solution, CD02 can provide customers with exceptional ease-of-use, high performance (transactions from hours to minutes), and multiple security layers that protect sensitive financial data. Additionally, the Sun Grid Compute Utility establishes an affordable scalability model, allowing CD02 to expand its business without investing in costly infrastructure before it is needed. CEC Entertainment CEC Entertainment, Inc. selected Sun Microsystems to upgrade and expand its disk environment to support its 475 company operated Chuck E. Cheese's family restaurant/entertainment centers. Citing Sun's superior solution, affordable price and flexibility, CEC Entertainment is leveraging Sun to meet iSCSI and SAN support requirements, believing the NAS Gateway is the best possible solution for the task. CEC Entertainment also chose Sun for its future growth support, overall excellent service and redundancy and high availability in the Sun data management technology. China Netcom Group Co. Ltd. China Netcom Group Co. Ltd. (CNC) selected Sun Microsystems services and technologies to help better serve its 135 million customer base, especially senior customers using its Sun-based VIP Customer Video Monitoring System. CNC is one of the country's largest telecommunications providers and one of the two Beijing telephone infrastructure providers for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The company is working with Sun Microsystems to migrate from Linux to the Solaris 10 OS running on Sun Fire servers powered by AMD Opteron processors and Sun StorageTek technologies. Choice Hotels Sun has provided a rock solid computing platform for Choice Hotels International for the last ten years and a recent implementation of the Java Enterprise System (Java ES) marks the latest milestone in the relationship. Running on the reliable, robust and flexible Sun hardware infrastructure, Java ES adds a great deal of value to Choice with functionalities such as calendar, email, directory and identity management. The cost-effective technology will help improve communication, access control and user provisioning of the affiliated hotel chains' employees, as well as host the company's public web sites. Clark County School District The Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada, selected Sun Microsystems, in conjunction with Sun partner The Root Group, to implement a new, integrated and Sun-based SAP ERP system designed to deliver increased flexibility and capabilities. Sun Client Solutions is providing on-site engineering support, building the clusters for the system, and assisting with the migration of incumbent applications from an IBM Mainframe using a Sun Mainframe Migration Solution. The new platform is based on the Solaris 10 OS running on Sun Fire servers with UltraSPARC processors, and attached to a Sun StorageTek tape library. Sun support and training services are also included in the deal. The Clark County School District is the fifth largest and fastest growing school district in the U.S. and currently serves over 293,000 students. EFG Eurobank Ergasias EFG Eurobank Ergasias, one of the leading banks in Greece, selected Sun Microsystems to deploy an identity management solution to more easily manage its user population. Leveraging the Sun Java Identity Management Suite, Eurobank is in the process of implementing an identity management solution to more efficiently manage user access and authorization across multiple information systems via a standardized and automated manner. Fox Television Stations Inc. Fox Television Stations, Inc. selected Sun Microsystems' Solaris 10 OS, servers, storage and services to power its new centralized sales, traffic and programming management system. The new Sun-based system is replacing stand-alone solutions running on IBM AS400 servers so Fox can more effectively monitor and manage the entire business process, from sales to billing, for all revenue streams. Frontier Communications Frontier Communications, a subsidiary of Citizens Communications Company, selected Sun as its provider for IT Operations Services. The five-year contract will provide Frontier with mainframe, midrange and storage support services from Sun. The agreement will provide Frontier with efficiencies through a combination of server consolidation, maintenance consolidation and remote monitoring and management services. As a result, Frontier Communications, one of the nation's largest independent communication services providers, is reducing the number of its servers by more than half and migrating to Sun Fire servers powered by the Solaris 10 OS. By reducing server complexity and assigning IT operations management to Sun Management Services, Frontier can dedicate its resources to providing better customer service while decreasing time-to-market for new services. Geisinger Health System Geisinger Health System selected Sun to power several major components of its Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) in Pennsylvania, designed to help improve patient safety and quality of care, increase efficiency and reduce costs. The Geisinger RHIO will initially connect three area hospitals, enabling them to electronically share health information and laboratory results, with a planned expansion to up to eight additional health systems within three years. Geisinger's ultimate goal is to join with other statewide RHIOs to form a larger coalition that will eventually connect into the National Health Information Network (NHIN). Regional networks are considered a critical step in developing the NHIN--a primary goal of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and many Congressional leaders. Geojit Financial Services Geojit Financial Services, India's leading financial services company and operator of India's first online trading system, will use Sun's Solaris OS, Sun Fire servers, Sun Cluster and Java System Web Server to power Mercury Online, a new online trading system. With Mercury Online, Geojit now offers a whole host of online services via a highly flexible trading and settlement system over the Internet, allowing customers to trade effectively and efficiently. The Groningen District The Groningen District in Holland is using Sun Ray thin client technology and the Solaris 10 OS in its innovative One Region Project. This wide ranging program includes government departments, schools, universities, hospitals, museums and libraries, job centers and seekers, as well as commercial companies and ultimately home users. Through the One Region Project, many users in the region of the Northern Netherlands will ultimately be connected securely to the Groningen Internet Exchange and retrieve their data using Sun Ray clients. With Sun Ray clients as the information desktop display, these users will be linked into a central data center. The aim of the program is not only to make the architecture cheaper, faster and more secure but it will also respond to the ongoing demand of using broadband services. Hewitt Associates Hewitt Associates, a global human resources outsourcing and consulting services company, is utilizing Sun storage and software to support the expanded integrated human resources business process outsourcing (HR BPO) services delivered to Hewitt's clients. Hewitt is leveraging the Sun StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager tape technology to maximize the use of its storage resources. Additionally, Hewitt is utilizing the Sun Java Enterprise System in its infrastructure software platforms, as well as the Solaris 10 OS. Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), the world's largest commercial air cargo terminal, has deployed six Sun Fire servers based on the UltraSPARC T1 processor to better manage annually over 2.7 million tons and 200 billion USD of cargo. The Sun Fire servers will be deployed as development machines, and also play a key role in supporting mission-critical services. Hactl has a very strong IT culture and the organization has long viewed technology as a key competitive differentiator. It is now using Solaris Containers to virtualize its infrastructure to create an on-demand computing resources pool. Hactl has also long been a supporter of Java technology and believes firmly that the Sun Fire servers can optimize its Java enabled, web-tiered applications. The move was prompted by the price performance of the chip-multithreading servers. Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research The Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), in collaboration with the Java Italian Association (JIA), finalized an agreement with Sun to extend the knowledge of Java technology within Italian schools by providing online access to Java training courses for students and IT teachers. The project, called "Java a Scuola" (Java at School), is part of a framework of initiatives sponsored by MIUR to enhance the quality of teaching by applying multimedia technology. As the use and penetration of Java continues to grow, the Italian education authorities are keen that future generations of students are equipped with critical Java skill sets that will be demanded by businesses. The initiative builds on Sun's track record and commitment in effectively promoting the use of technology in education. Lufthansa Systems Lufthansa Systems, one of the leading IT-service providers for the airline and aviation industry was looking for a different solution to run application and database services additionally to mainframe. All requests on available flights, about 12 million transactions per day, now run on the Solaris 10 OS using Sun Fire servers powered by AMD Opteron processors. The software Lufthansa Systems uses is completely written in Java. Mexican Ministry of Education The Mexican Ministry of Education will be using more than 27,000 Sun Ultra(TM) 20 Workstations to help improve education in its public schools. As part of a US$400 million deal, Interconecta signed a five-year services contract with Sun to provide these workstations. The agreement, the largest education deal for Sun in Latin America to date, is a component of the Mexican Ministry of Education's national Enciclomedia project, which aims to offer computer technology to fifth- and six-grade classrooms in Mexico's national public school system. Miquel Alimentacio Group Miquel Alimentacio Group selected Sun Microsystems to create a platform for its new integrated management system. The company purchased Sun based on its superior technology as well as having a clearly defined product roadmap. The new platform has allowed Miquel Alimentacio Group to consolidate its storage information systems into a homogeneous environment based on Sun Fire servers using UltraSPARC processors running the Solaris 10 OS. The platform is completed with the Sun StorEdge technology. Mitac Computer Ltd. Mitac Computer Ltd. (Shunde), a subsidiary of Mitac Corporation, is leveraging Sun Microsystems to improve processes in its production plant. Sun is helping Mitac Computer (Shunde) Ltd. to centralize its data management based on Sun StorEdge technologies. The company cited Sun's ability to dramatically reduce IT costs and complexity as the primary factor in its purchasing decision. Montreal Exchange Montreal Exchange (MX), Canada's oldest and leading financial derivatives exchange, recently developed and implemented a leading-edge trading technology called SOLA(TM). To further enhance its computing capacity and energy efficiency, MX will migrate its infrastructure to Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire servers. MX, also the technical operator for the Boston Options Exchange (BOX), will work with Sun to implement a high performance system comprised of over twenty Sun Fire servers, all running on the Solaris 10 OS and supported by Sun Spectrum and Installation services. This combination will provide both organizations with a fast, reliable, expandable and secure system to handle ever-increasing trading traffic, application development, testing and monitoring. The new Sun IT infrastructure will run SOLA, a next generation trading solution which sets new benchmarks for performance and capacity. SOLA will run on Sun Solaris 10 for both MX and BOX production environments. MX will also expand the data storage capability, protection and availability for both exchanges with an end-to-end storage system based on Sun StorEdge SAN arrays. NBCOlympics NBCOlympics used Sun systems to provide network support and interactive technology to its website, NBCOlympics.com, during the network's coverage of the 2006 Winter Olympics from Torino, Italy. The website provided up-to-the-minute TV listings, breaking news, feature stories, photo slideshows, videos, and more. Sun powered an SMS and e-mail notification engine that sent coverage times and event information directly to the in-boxes and cell phones of fans who registered. NBCOlympics used a combination of industry-standard Sun Fire UltraSPARC IV+-based systems and Sun Fire x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers powered by AMD Opteron processors. The servers run the open source Solaris 10 OS with Sun N1 System Manager to ensure maximum uptime, fault recovery and load management. The solution also employed Sun data management products to store and manage all the scores, video and other broadcast components. O2 O2, the leading UK mobile operator, has deployed a Sun application-ready platform to support its recently launched i-mode service in three separate O2 data centers. Designed to meet the integration and development needs of O2's i-mode service, Sun, in conjunction with NEC, has delivered a scalable, reliable and secure infrastructure platform that has enabled O2 to maintain and increase its 25 million customer base and build sales traction with retailers and third-party content providers. Built on Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC processors, Sun StorEdge technologies and Sun Java System Messaging Server , O2's i-mode service supports 1.0 million mailboxes. Parago Parago has the simple goal of helping companies build relationships with their customers. The company designs, develops and manages marketing programs aimed at attracting new customers, establishing strong relationships, and encouraging long-term loyalty. We had many large systems deployed in various capacities occupying rack space. Plexus Corporation Plexus Corporation, an electronic manufacturing services company, is utilizing Sun Fire servers powered by AMD Opteron processors to help provide a complete menu of value-added design and manufacturing services to its customers. The ease of installation and configuration, the low heat output and the low cost of the Sun Fire servers were key in Plexus' decision to implement, and has stated the performance is 'quite frankly awesome'. Procuri A new order was recently placed by Procuri for additional Sun Fire servers powered by AMD Opteron processors to be used in Procuri's TotalSource On Demand solution for the storage and management of sourcing documents. Procuri, last year's winner of the 2005 Meritorious Supplier Performance Award, depends on high performance for its true, multi-tenant, Software-as-a-Service delivery environment. Procuri's customers require high availability of documents related to sourcing events managed within this leading edge On Demand solution, and Procuri chose Sun's Sun Fire servers to fill this critical role and improve the performance of its solution. Ramtron International Corporation Ramtron International Corporation, a leader in the supply of mixed-signal integrated circuit solutions enhanced by FRAM memory, selected Sun's data management technologies to upgrade its mission critical projects and designs database. The existing system was in need of an upgrade due to scalability and performance limitations. The Sun NAS architecture provided the scalability and price/performance ratio required by Ramtron's business needs. An added bonus was Sun's world class support organization and the Sun StorEdge NAS appliance's ability to support a mixed Linux and UNIX environment through an attractive fiber channel raid controller interface when compared to the likes of HP, EMC, and NetApp. SaskTel SaskTel, the leading full service communications company in Saskatchewan, has renewed its three-year Sun Java Enterprise System subscription to expand its growing service offering and provide increased functionality for its customers. With greater access to and easier control of information, internal and external administrative services are streamlined as more capability of the Java ES is utilized. State of Michigan The State of Michigan consolidated over 15 servers onto two Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC processors running the Solaris 10 OS. With the systems, the State of Michigan has enhanced its existing IT production environment with a disaster recovery solution and is able to provide business development, employment and training services to its constituents. Sun Services is engaged for application migration, consolidation and disaster recovery implementation as well as training and support for the solution. The State of Michigan selected the Sun Enterprise Consolidation Solution for its reliability, performance and the advantages delivered with domain partitioning over the previous horizontal computing model. Tata Sky Ltd. Tata Sky Ltd., the joint venture between TATA and STAR, is using Sun's Solaris 10 OS and Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC IV+ processors to provide IT Infrastructure solutions and support for the launch of the company's direct-to-home (DTH) television service in India in mid-2006. Tata Sky is investing in building a high quality digital infrastructure in the country to offer a superior television viewing experience to Indian households. The service will enhance the choice for viewers looking for the best of pay television services in the country. Tata Sky aims to become India's largest digital television platform, offering consumers a wide array of programming choices with interactive features and superior picture and sound quality. Techbook Techbook, a leader in content transformation, is leveraging Sun Microsystems to help customers uncover new digital revenue opportunities and efficiently turn static data into dynamic digital content. Selected for its ability to provide investment protection as well as a comprehensive solution, Sun is delivering Sun storage technologies, Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC processors, and Sun StorEdge Enterprise Backup Server (EBS) to Techbook. The technology will connect heterogeneous servers and operating system clusters to the Sun storage solution, helping customers meet their business objectives through more efficient content management processes. TIM Hellas S.A. TIM Hellas Communications S.A. selected Sun Microsystems to improve business processes and help better serve its 2.3 million customers in Greece. The company is cutting costs by migrating away from HP Alpha servers and consolidating its data center with UltraSPARC IV processor-based Sun Fire servers running the Solaris OS. The company is also creating a new cost-effective billing system for its customers based on Oracle and leverages Sun Java Enterprise System. Also as part of the deal, Sun Services will provide application readiness, clustering and Oracle HA (high availability) migration consulting as well as installation services and a three-year support agreement. UGS Corp. UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, chose Sun to consolidate its servers in a virtualized environment to increase efficiency and flexibility, and reduce operational costs. UGS is leveraging the unique Solaris Containers inherent in the Sun Solaris 10 OS as a key component of its IT virtualization strategy. Utilizing Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC processors and Sun Fire servers powered by AMD Opteron processors, UGS created a grid that allows the company to easily deploy, isolate and move applications in order to optimally prepare and respond to business cycle-induced surges in demand. University of Notre Dame The University of Notre Dame is deploying a high-performance computing (HPC) grid of over 290 Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor-based Sun Fire x64 servers. The grid will have two functions: supporting the Center for Research Computing, a central facility within the University of Notre Dame that supports research computing; and supporting Notre Dame's involvement in the Northwest Indiana Computational Grid, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded initiative between Purdue, Notre Dame and Argonne National Lab which brings significant storage and compute cycles to the northwest corner of Indiana. A crucial factor in Notre Dame's selection was Sun's Customer Ready Systems (CRS) organization. Sun CRS took the responsibility of building and deploying the grid, with minimal investment required by the Notre Dame staff. University of Southern California The University of Southern California (USC) Center for High-Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) added 512 of Sun's dual-core Sun Fire servers to its powerful supercomputer cluster. The new x64 servers are in addition to the 360 dual-core Sun Fire servers that USC has already deployed. The USC supercomputing server cluster currently is ranked the 24th-fastest supercomputer in the world on the Top500(R) list. W.W. Grainger, Inc. W.W. Grainger, Inc., North America's leading business-to-business industrial distributor, went live this quarter with the world's largest SAP instance relying on Sun's Client Solutions services and its SPARC/Solaris OS infrastructure. The solution includes over 350 Sun servers. Sun partnered with Grainger to plan, architect and roll out the solution over a single weekend. Yokogawa Europe Yokogawa Europe, a world leader in industrial automation and control, test and measurement, information systems, and industry support, selected Sun's data management technologies to create and implement a new, easy-to-manage storage solution for its project files and Microsoft(R) Exchange(R) environments. Sun is building the system based on four NAS appliances with 4-8 terabytes each. To share and protect the data between the four locations, Sun StorageTek File Replicator over distances of at least 50km will be implemented. Yokogawa Europe selected Sun due to its incomparable combination of leading technology, storage consulting expertise and proven price/performance.
