Reuters Opens New Development Centre In Beijing Using Sun Microsystems' Virtual Desktop Solution

Reuters Selects Sun Microsystems to Build Sustainable and Secure Workplace of the Future

Menlo Park, Calif. October 26, 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDQ:SUNW), announced today that Reuters, the world's largest international news and financial information source has selected Sun's virtual desktop solution to improve business agility and flexibility, enhance security and reduce management and administration costs for its new center in Beijing. To support Reuters growth of data operations and development centers in Asia Pacific countries and enable planned growth of the Beijing business, the company took the decision to move away from the traditional PC model and instead host virtual desktops in the data center using Sun Ray Software and VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Employees in the Reuters Beijing office are now equipped with Sun Ray thin clients for on-site work and to remotely access their virtual desktops through Sun Secure Global Desktop software which allows employees to securely access their virtual desktops from a wide range of client devices connected to the Internet.

Underlining its commitment to China, Reuters Technology China Ltd (RTCL) will house approximately 200 China-based Reuters staff by end of 2006 and this number will increase to 600 in the next three years. Seventy percent of the 200 staff currently employed at RTCL is graduates from leading Chinese universities such as Tsinghua University, Beijing University and China's Academy of Science. RTCL will provide leading edge content, analytics, trading, technology and messaging capabilities to some of its largest customers. In opening the Beijing office, Reuters needs went beyond the flexibility, efficiency and scalability expected from a 21st century desktop environment and extended to pandemic planning and rigorous protection of intellectual property. Management and delivery of all IT applications from centrally managed servers will support these needs, eliminating the space, management, cost, virus and security risks associated with deploying a desktop PC per employee and allowing quick and easy access through virtual desktops.

The centrally managed 'pool' of resources (hardware, software and tools) is virtualized using VMware technology and will increase utilization of assets, enable easy sharing and re-use between projects or across locations. Sun Ray thin clients produce no noise and minimal heat due to a power consumption of only 4w. Access to pooled resources is controlled through the integration of Sun Java Directory Server, Sun Java Identity Manager, and VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure that permit easy user provisioning of applications and resources from multiple application platforms such as Solaris 10 OS, Windows XP, Mainframe, and Linux.

The opening of Reuters Technology China Ltd (RTCL) will help build on the company's position as a global leader in the provision of data and content to the financial services industry. The newly constructed centre, which opened on October 9th in Beijing, will contribute to delivering key strands of Reuters Core Plus strategy, including reaching into new geographic markets and harnessing high value content.

The development division of RTCL will focus on the infrastructure that supports key Reuters' products such as its premium desktop 3000Xtra, Reuters Trader and Reuters Knowledge. By working with Sun and responding to the innovation of Virtual Desktop technology, RTCL can now have additional support for security, future growth and the opportunity of reduced total cost.

Alex Hungate, Managing Director in Reuters Asia said, "The talented developers and data analysts that will work here in China will be able to harness the latest technologies to ensure that financial institutions using Reuters' services will get financial information that's fast and accurate."

"Efficient, flexible and secure IT systems are critical to the growth of an organization and first-rate customer service," said Larry Scott, VP Financial Services Industry at Sun Microsystems. "Reuters deployment of Sun's virtual desktop solution highlights the business value that organizations can achieve through increased flexibility, tighter security and reduced administration and management costs and we are delighted that Reuters has entrusted Sun to manage its desktop environment."

"Sun and VMware are committed to enabling customers to migrate to a more secure and centrally managed desktop environment," said Brian Byun, VP of Products and Alliances at VMware. "VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure combined with Sun's Virtual Desktop solution can transform an enterprise by delivering desktop environments and applications with increased security and end-user mobility."
