SUN ENDORSES OPENMP; JOINS ARCHITECTURE BOARD TO DEFINE STANDARD

PALO ALTO, Calif., August 19, 1998 -- Extending its commitment to deliver the industry's most scalable, high-performance software for scientific and engineering applications, Sun™ Microsystems, Inc. today announced its endorsement of the OpenMP standard for shared memory parallel applications. Sun will join the OpenMP Architecture Board whose charter is to define the OpenMP standard. Today's announcement follows Sun's recent acquisition of Dakota Scientific Software (see press release dated 6/24) and together these announcements further demonstrate Sun's efforts to serve the high-performance computing community with a wide range of symmetric multi-processing products and robust development environments.

"As the originators of OpenMP and a leading member of the OpenMP Architecture Board, we welcome Sun's endorsement of the OpenMP standard for application parallelization," said David Kuck, Chairman of the Board for Kuck & Associates. "With Sun's endorsement, ISVs and developers can now look forward to leveraging OpenMP's portability across the industry-leading Solaris™ operating environment."

Designed by major computer hardware and software vendors, OpenMP is an industry-standard application program interface (API) for multi-platform shared-memory programming on a range of vendor's platforms, from desktop machines to high-end supercomputers. Developers are embracing OpenMP as a standard for easing application interoperability and protecting investments made in the development of high-performance applications.

"Sun's support of OpenMP is important for Sun users, since it enables developers to write applications for the Solaris operating environment that share a common interface and ease interoperability with other platforms," said Todd Lowe, executive vice president of ILOG's CPLEX Division, a firm that pioneered the development of commercial parallel software products.

In order to provide developers with the highest-quality tools, Sun expects to incorporate the OpenMP standard into future versions of the Sun™ Performance WorkShop™ Fortran product line, as well as future versions of other Sun software products. With OpenMP, developers can increase productivity and save money by using a standard set of compiler directives for doing shared-memory parallelism without requiring extensive rewriting of applications. Developers will increase productivity by writing one single, efficient parallel application that is flexible for a range of hardware platforms, including Solaris, various UNIX® systems and the Microsoft Windows NT platform.

"Sun continues to be a leader in the high-performance computing market," said Joe Keller, Director of Marketing and Support for Sun's Developer Tools Products. "With Sun's endorsement of the OpenMP standard, customers can continue to expect the highest in performance and scalability from applications running on the Solaris operating environment."
