SUN COLLABORATES WITH LINUX COMMUNITY TO MAKE LINUX AVAILABLE FOR ULTRASPARC SYSTEMS

PALO ALTO, Calif. December 8, 1998 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that it has teamed with the Linux community to complete a port of the popular freeware Linux operating environment to the UltraSPARC™ architecture. Developers and end-users can now download Linux for the UltraSPARC platform from Internet sites around the world.

"Every copy of Linux used is another win for UNIX® and open standards," said Ken Okin, vice president and general manager, Workstation Products at Sun Microsystems. "There is a tremendous groundswell of interest in UNIX systems, especially among software developers in engineering, e-commerce and intranet applications. By promoting user choice of UNIX operating systems on the UltraSPARC architecture, Sun further demonstrates its commitment to open standards and encourages the expansion of the overall UNIX market."

In addition, Sun announced that it intends to add Linux compatibility to the Solaris™ operating environment so that customers can take advantage of the breadth of new Linux applications within the highly reliable Solaris environment.

Since joining Linux International in May 1998, Sun has worked with the Linux community to port Linux to the UltraSPARC platform. Linux for the UltraSPARC platform can be downloaded free over the Internet from a variety of sites worldwide. The download locations are accessible from http://sun.com/products-n-solutions/promotions.html. In addition, Sun resellers can now package UltraSPARC workstations with both Solaris and Linux operating systems, easing installation and administration for users who develop in both environments.

An Outstanding Platform for Demanding Applications

Sun's Ultra™ workstations provide a robust, powerful computing environment for a wide range of demanding applications. Since their initial introduction last January, the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 workstations have become the most popular, highest volume Sun products ever. In November, Sun announced that it had expanded and enhanced this family of tremendously successful workstations, with 'bigger, better, faster' models starting at just $2,495. Sun's Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 workstation models match PC-level prices yet deliver more features, greater performance and added flexibility for demanding technical computing applications, making them ideally suited to users looking for an alternative to the Microsoft Windows environment.
