Sun Community Source Licensing (SCSL) - Processor Technology Resources

SCSL is a powerful combination of the best aspects of proprietary licensing and the more contemporary open source technology models. This new paradigm ensures compatibility among deployed versions of the software through required testing, yet allows proprietary modifications and extensions, including performance enhancements.

Sun's Community Source Licensing (SCSL) initiative is a new model for licensing intellectual property. SCSL provides a more flexible process for gaining access to technology that allows tool vendors, chip designers, commercial OEMs, universities and research organizations access to the picoJava and SPARC® microprocessor source files without fees during the initial evaluation and development phases. The goal of this program is to foster a broader relationship with the technology community.

Making technologies readily available for evaluation and early-stage development will increase the rate of innovation. With this effort new products can be developed more quickly and our licensees will realize increased competitiveness. Members can help each other refine, extend, and improve picoJava and SPARC technologies by sharing information and test-driving technologies without the barrier of up-front fees.
