10art-ni Corporation compared the performance of its popular WebReportCafe application on several operating systems including Solaris 10, Solaris 9, Windows XP, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Without any code modifications, WebReportCafe ran from 25 to 150 percent faster on the Solaris 10 OS than on any other platform tested.

After making minor changes to the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) interface, WebReportCafe's performance increased an additional 5 percent on the Solaris 10 operating system (OS), making it a whopping 30 to 155 percent faster than the other platforms.

Innovating with Java Technologies
Founded on the day Java technologies was first introduced—May 23 1997—the Tokyo-based 10art-ni Corporation has delivered cutting-edge enterprise solutions to a variety of corporations including Alico Japan and All Nippon Airways (ANA). 10artni's offerings include professional services—such as pre-development research, system design, system development, and support—as well as Java technology-enabled products like Ninja-VA and WebReportCafe. Recognized internationally, Ninja-VA is a visual Web system development solution that employs the Java 2 Platform.

Enterprise Edition (J2EE platform) and the Java Studio software to dramatically improve developers' productivity and application quality. WebReportCafe is 10art-ni's unique form-based solution that addresses financial data sharing issues. The application accesses data from disparate accounting systems—that may include Japanese, Chinese, and Korean data elements—and enables the generation of an integrated table ready for secure distribution in PDF format.

Evaluating Operating Systems and Sizing
10art-ni scheduled a WebReportCafe benchmark test to evaluate its performance on the Windows XP, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Solaris 9, and the newly released Solaris 10 OSs. The test would also collect application capacity data. Windows XP would run on a Pentium 4 CPU-driven system. The other operating systems would run on Sun Fire servers powered by AMD Opteron processors.

A tool dubbed PDFStressTest evaluated WebReportCafe's speed on each platform by generating 500 virtual clients, each issuing three PDF file creation requests. Performance was measured by the number of PDF file pages created per minute (PPM).

Not surprisingly, the Solaris 9 OS outperformed both Windows XP and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. However, the Solaris 10 OS was the fastest—outpacing Windows XP by 150 percent, Red Hat Enterprise Linux by 40 percent, and the Solaris 9 OS by 25 percent. "By making minor changes to the JVM interface, WebReportCafe's performance on Solaris 10 increased 155 percent over Windows XP, 45 percent over Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and 30 percent over Solaris 9," added Takashige Noguchi, Overseas Operation, Marketing Group, Application Business Unit at 10art-ni.

"The tests also revealed other benefits of Solaris 10," continued Noguchi. "Increasing the number of CPUs on a Sun Fire V40z server running Solaris 10 enables a near-linear increase in the application's performance. . . .We were also impressed by the level of resource utilization made possible by Solaris Zones."

Noguchi concluded, "Clearly Solaris 10 on the Sun Fire servers outperforms the competition. We expect to develop more products on the platform and will sincerely recommend it to our customers."
