Q:
When do you use SNMP and when do you use DMI?
A:
Both SNMP and DMI provide a set of tools to enable the development of agents that can be used for system and network management. Choosing which one to use depends largely on the requirements of the task at hand as well as the knowledge base of the developer.

SNMP Agents

Q:
Is this SMUX technology?
A:
SMUX, as defined in RFC 1227, is the ability to simultaneously execute several SNMP subagents via a Master Agent as opposed to only being able to execute one monolithic SNMP agent.

Solstice Enterprise Agents allows the simultaneous execution of multiple SNMP and DMI subagents via a Master Agent using a technology that is not SMUX, but something similar. Solstice Enterprise Agents has no plans to support the SMUX protocol outlined in RFC 1227, as it has been retired to "historic" status.

Q:
What do I do with my legacy SNMP agents?
A:
Legacy SNMP agents that have configurable port options can be registered as static subagents to take advantage of the extensible Master Agent architecture.

Q:
What subagents will be provided with the product?
A:
Solstice Enterprise Agents 1.0 will ship with a basic MIB-II subagent. Additional agents are planned for subsequent releases.

Q:
Does this support "Agentx"?
A:
"Agentx" is a proposed IETF standard for the communication protocol between the SNMP master agent and subagents. Solstice Enterprise Agents v 1.0 currently does not support "Agentx".

Q:
What version of SNMP is supported?
A:
Solstice Enterprise Agents currently supports SNMPv1.

Q:
How does this interoperate with the RPC agents provided with Solstice Enterprise Manager?
A:
Currently, the RPC agents provided with Solstice Enterprise Manager and Solstice Enterprise Agents are not interoperable.

Q:
How is this compatible with other SNMP-based agents that may be installed on my system?
A:
SNMP agents that have configurable port options can be registered to operate as static subagents under the Master agent. This allows the SNMP agents to take advantage of the extensible architecture.

DMI Agents

Q:
What protocol does this DMI implementation utlize? DCE/RPC or ONC/RPC?
A:
Solstice Enterprise Agents implements ONC/RPC for both the communication between the Management Interface and the Service Provider as well as between the Service Provider and the Component Interfaces.

Q:
How does this implementation interoperate with other DMI implementations?
A:
The first release of Solstice Enterprise Agents supports the ONC/RPC protocol. Any DMI implementation utilizing ONC/RPC will be interoperable. Any DMI implementation utilizing DCE/RPC will not be interoperable. Plans for DCE/RPC support are under consideration for subsequent releases.
