Java Powered

The original launch of the Java Desktop System (JDS) in 2003 marked the beginning of Sun's initiative to deliver a complete desktop environment built using open source software. The JDS stack includes an integration of open source software from a variety of communities including Linux, Open Solaris, GNOME, Mozilla, Java, and OpenOffice. Since the release of JDS, we have continued to see more and more initiatives from other companies around the world who are building a complete desktop software stack based on open source software. The desktop operating system is no longer controlled by any single entity. It is truly a product category evolving as a result of the participation age.

In support of the global development for next generation desktop software, Sun is expanding the reach of JDS from one Linux distribution to many open source distributions by broadening its partner program offering. The Sun Java Desktop Powered Program helps enable partners who build and distribute a desktop environment, whether it be based on Linux, OpenSolaris or any other operating system, to enhance their offerings by including key desktop products and technologies available from Sun. These Sun technologies are designed to improve desktop productivity and help provide extended functionality, help optimize interoperability in a Microsoft Windows environment, and help provide the enterprise with a radical new way to accelerate business application and service deployment powered by Sun Java System servers and the Sun Java Enterprise System. The expansion of the Sun Java Desktop Powered Program is designed to make JDS much more broadly available on next generation desktops.

The major components provided to redistributors through this program are summarized in the following table.
