The Jini Device Architecture Specification describes several ways in which a device (or any other service) can participate in a system of Jini technology-enabled services and devices without the device (or service) being a general Jini technology-enabled service. The possibilities listed are not exhaustive--there could be other interesting models as well. The main point to pay attention to here is that any service can participate in the Jini architecture, even with no modification of the service provider itself. This "device architecture" applies equally well to legacy systems and other software services.
