Solaris 10 10/08 Operating System

The following information applies to systems that are preinstalled with the Solaris 10 10/08 Operating System.

As an owner of one of these Sun hardware products, you can use this software according to the terms in the Software License Agreement and Entitlement documents provided with the hardware.

The software of this Solaris release is completely installed on your system, including everything installed by the "Entire Distribution plus OEM support" option. This includes all the locales supported by this Solaris release. However, some software provided in the Solaris 10 10/08 media kit has not been installed on your system.

If you want to use the additional software, obtain the full media kit for this Solaris release and install software from the included discs. Order the appropriate media kit for the version preinstalled on your system:
  • Solaris 10 10/08 OS: Part number SOLZ9-10JC9A7M

Starting to Use Solaris 10 10/08 OS Software

First, follow the installation instructions provided with the hardware.

Note that some Sun hardware products require more extended startup procedures than are described in the following steps. For example, there are actions explained in the "Sun Blade 8000 Modular System Installation Guide" that must be performed before starting the Solaris 10 software preinstalled on that system. Or, for the Sun Fire 12K server, refer to the "Sun Fire High-End Systems Software Overview Guide".

When you are ready to startup the preinstalled Solaris 10 10/08 software, perform the following steps:
  1. Have ready the following details that apply to this system at your site:
    • Language and Locale
    • Host Name
    • Network Connectivity Protocol
    • IP Address
    • MAC Address
    • Security Settings
    • Name Service Type
    • Domain Name
    • Name Server
    • Subnet and Subnet Mask
    • Time Zone
    • Date and Time
    • Root Password
    • Proxy Server Configuration

Details for some of these items can be applied automatically to your system during startup if your network has an existing JumpStart environment.

  2. Follow the power-on instructions included with the hardware.

The hardware might run a power-on self-test (POST) routine that takes awhile to complete before you can continue with the software configuration.

  3. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
When you have finished configuring the Solaris Operating System software, you can proceed with installing and configuring additional software.

Solaris Zones Software Partitioning

This Solaris release includes a software partitioning technology used to virtualize operating system services, and to provide an isolated and secure environment for running applications.

On this system, Solaris 10 10/08 OS is preinstalled as a global zone. Some software products might require installation in a nonglobal zone.

For information about how to configure and use zones on your system, see the "System Administration Guide: Solaris Containers--Resource Management and Solaris Zones", which is available at: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-1592

Using Solaris Live Upgrade

Systems preinstalled with Solaris 10 10/08 are configured with a partition (slice 3) intended for use with the Solaris Live Upgrade feature. For more information about the Solaris Live Upgrade facility, see:

After you finish configuring and patching the Solaris boot environment, remember to use Live Upgrade software to update the existing alternative boot environment.

Installing Another Solaris Release

If you choose to install a different Solaris release on this system in place of the preinstalled version, follow the instructions provided in the media folder for that Solaris release.

However, you risk deleting all the preinstalled software on this system if you perform a new installation of any release of Solaris software, rather than performing an upgrade of the preinstalled Solaris.

If you intend to make a fresh installation of Solaris OS, ensure that all the other preinstalled software you plan to use is backed up or available to you for reinstallation.

Restoring Preinstalled Software

This system is not provided with media that reproduces the exact state of software preinstalled on this system. If you replace the original hard drive that contains the preinstalled software, the replacement drive will not contain the software.

To be ready to restore the preinstalled software to this system in the future, prepare a backup of the software you intend to use. Order the appropriate media kit for the version of Solaris 10 10/08 OS preinstalled on your system:
  • Solaris 10 10/08 OS: Part number SOLZ9-10JC9A7M
The Solaris installation option that corresponds to the preinstalled contents is called "Entire Distribution plus OEM support."

Some software products are provided on the Solaris DVD in the ExtraValue directory. The default Solaris installation process might not install all the software from this directory that you intend to use.

This Solaris software media kit does not include Sun Java Enterprise System media. If a version of Sun Java Enterprise System software is preloaded on your system, you can reinstall that software with a Java Enterprise System media kit.

Recent versions of these and other Sun software products are available for download from: http://www.sun.com/download

After reinstalling the software, obtain and apply the most recent recommended patches for these products from: http://sunsolve.sun.com
