The Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.2 is designed for developer productivity with tools to help deploy applications quickly. With a small-footprint adoption of J2EE platform that is suitable for broad adoption and embedding in third-party systems and applications, the Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.2 brings J2EE 1.4 technology into volume markets. It is completely free of license fees for development, deployment, and redistribution, with support available for an additional charge.

Changing the economics of application servers
The Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.2 enables enterprises to standardize on a J2EE 1.4 application server for developing and deploying enterprise-class applications and services — without incurring product license fees. The small footprint and free development and deployment licenses also make it supremely suitable for bundling and distribution with J2EE applications, subject to Sun’s current terms and conditions.

Unlike other commercially available application servers, the Java System Application Server is built on the very platform that defines the J2EE standard—J2EE 1.4 Reference Implementation source code. The same development team that delivers the Reference Implementation also developed the Java System Application Server 8.2. This assures the most rigorous J2EE standards compliance and Web services interoperability through support of the Web Services Interoperability Profile (WS-I). Enterprises and application vendors benefit from this J2EE standards-focused approach, because it reduces the risk of proprietary lock-in and enables compliant applications that are portable across compliant application servers — without costly modifications.

The Java System Application Server 8.2 is also available in Standard and Enterprise Editions, providing additional features such as higher performance and load balancing, as well as clustering and monitoring capabilities. The Java System Application Server is designed to help enterprises and service providers maximize their freedom of choice through Java technology’s “Write Once, Run Anywhere”™ simplicity, and is optimized for Web services. It helps enterprises and service providers lower their total cost of ownership (TCO), accelerate time to market, and increase productivity.

Delivers the platform for Web services
The Java System Application Server delivers the industry’s first integrated Java Web Services Pack in a high-performance, scalable, and reliable J2EE application platform. The Java Web Services Pack includes the Java API for XML Messaging (JAXM), Java API for XML Processing (JAXP), Java API for XML Registries (JAXR), and Java API for XML-based Remote Procedure Call (JAX-RPC). The Java System Application Server supports both the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Web Services Description Language (WSDL), offering a complete Web services infrastructure. It also provides comprehensive support for the WS-I Basic Profile, making it easier to deliver interoperable Web services.

Using these powerful APIs, the Java System Application Server can easily integrate new and emerging Web services without having to upgrade the application server. Enterprises and service providers can make their own services available to customers and partners, or even provide application-to-application integration by taking advantage of the included Web services capabilities.

The Java System Application Server delivers a high-performance Java Message Service (JMS™) provider for message-based integration. It supports the updated J2EE Connector Architecture for superior access to enterprise applications, and integrates easily with the proven Java System Directory Server for identity management; the J2EE technology-based, industry-leading Java System Portal Server; and the JMS API-compatible Sun Java System Integration Server. This comprehensive integration across products helps deliver the scalability, reliability, and security required by today’s demanding 24x7 application services and Web services.

Rapid application development and fast time to market
The Java System Application Server 8.2 delivers a powerful, integrated application development environment that increases developer productivity and speeds overall time to market. It provides rapid install with a compact footprint and fast server start time, as well as compliance with J2EE 1.4 specifications. This enables applications and components to be reused across multiple projects and platforms, and exposed as interoperable Web services. The standardization of J2EE Deployment APIs also makes it easier to integrate your favorite integrated development environment (IDE) with the platform. With features including fast/incremental application deployment and dynamic configuration, developer productivity is increased, and solutions get to the enterprise faster.

Delivers end-to-end high performance
The Java System Application Server delivers end-to-end high performance across a broad spectrum of Web and enterprise application requirements, ranging from application logic to presentation layer to connectivity for integration with enterprise and legacy applications. The Java System Application Server provides the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) engine from the proven Java System Web Server, ranked among the fastest in the world. It also provides the JMS engine from the Java System Message Queue product, delivering industry-leading JMS performance.

The Java System Application Server includes a high-performance, container-managed persistence (CMP) engine that supports object-torelational (O/R) mapping. It supports intelligent load balancing of Java Servlet components with third-party load balancing solutions. By offering service provider interfaces for the J2EE Connector Architecture, the Java System Application Server can easily be integrated with high-performance, J2EE Connector Architecture-compliant connectors for fast synchronous access to enterprise applications and data.
