Sun Java Communications Suite: Significantly More Cost-effective Than Microsoft

Sun's leadership in providing cost-effective communications infrastructure was confirmed in a study by the Radicati Group. The total cost of ownership (TCO) of the Sun Java Communications Suite is less than 1/4 of the TCO of Microsoft Exchange 2003, according to customer surveys. The 3-year average TCO per user, including software and hardware, for the Sun Java Communications Suite was $73.63 compared to $317.21 for Microsoft Exchange 2003.

Sun Java System Communications Suite meets the challenges of today's communications by providing customers with the features they require while enabling them to control the potentially skyrocketing costs of communications infrustructure.

Why is the Sun TCO Lower than Microsoft?

Scalability

Less hardware required - The Sun Communications Suite deployed for an average of 38,300 users required 3 Sun servers versus a deployment of Microsoft Exchange 2003 for an average of 21,930 users on 44 servers.

Less maintenance required – Software maintenance costs for Sun Java Communications Suite were almost 1/4 the cost of Microsoft; hardware maintenance was almost 1/5 the cost of Microsoft.

Performance

Better message processing - The Sun Java System Messaging Server holds a world record SPECmail200l benchmark with scalable and reliable delivery to over 1 million users on a single Sun Fire system.

Cost-efficient messaging - Better messaging throughput reduces the number of servers required and reduces maintenance requirements.

Reliability and Availability

Better reliability, more availability, less downtime - High availability solutions, such as integration with Sun Cluster and Veritas Cluster, and hot swap capabilities significantly increase uptime of Sun Java Communications Suite.

Lower downtime costs - Sun Java Communications Suite has downtime costs that are less than 1/2 those of Microsoft.

Ease of Migration and Upgrades

Flexible, future proofed platform - Open standards, well-documented APIs and integration with existing infrastructure facilitate migration and upgrades of Sun Java System communications software.

Lower cost of migration and upgrades - Migration and upgrade costs for Sun Java System communications software is less than 1/5 those of Microsoft and 1/2 those of IBM.

Ease of Administration

Efficient administration – Rich delegated administration and user self-administration capabilities, not to mention fewer servers to administer, results in more cost-effective administration.

Lower administration costs - Administration costs for Sun Java Communications Suite were over 5 times lower than those of Microsoft.

The TCO analysis was based on a survey of Sun customers conducted in the first 1/2 of 2005. Data on TCO for Microsoft Exchange 2003 is based on an earlier study conducted by the Radicati Group entitled, "Microsoft Exchange 2003 Total Cost of Ownership." Key highlights from that study are reprinted in the current report for ease of comparison with Sun's TCO.
