On May 8, 2007, Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced it has completed its acquisition of the intellectual property assets of SavaJe Technologies. The acquisition of these assets will allow Sun to rapidly expand the mobile client side of its Software business, offering an integrated mobile platform centered on Java technology that delivers a wider array of bundled services. Java is deployed on more than 1.83 billion phones (Ovum, 05/07) and 8 out of 10 new mobile phone devices being sold in the marketplace today are Java based. It is the clear application platform of choice for developers producing new content -- including applications and services. Mobile handsets are becoming full featured computing devices enabling services that are increasingly central to consumers' daily lives. With the newly acquired assets from SavaJe, Sun can expand its offerings to customers, allowing faster deployment of new applications and services leveraging one of the largest developer community in the world. When integrated into Sun's portfolio, the SavaJe assets will further enable customers to deliver a richer user experience as well as provide time to market advantage, technology independence, strong security, improved Java performance and reduced integration costs. There is an ever-increasing amount of digital content being created for the next-generation handsets and mobile devices. This acquisition demonstrates how Sun looks to provide solutions to support the growing need in the marketplace and in doing so, support the overall growth of Sun's business to ultimately drive greater value for both customers and shareholders.
