Solaris 8 10/00 (UD2)
With the addition of the mod_jserv module and related files, the Apache Web server now supports Java servlets.
You can use Generic LAN driver (GLD) to implement much of the STREAMS and Data Link Provider Interface (DLPI) functionality for a Solaris network driver. Until the Solaris 8 10/00 release, the GLD module was available only for Intel Platform Edition network drivers. Now GLD is available for SPARC Platform Edition network drivers as well.
High Availability Drivers provides a detailed description of how to design drivers to support high availability through driver hardening and ensuring serviceability. This material extends information provided in the Solaris 8 "Writing Device Drivers." (See "Solaris 8 Software Developer Supplement" for more information.)
IP network multipathing enables a system to recover from single-point failures with network adapters and increased traffic throughput. In this release, if a failure occurs in the network adapter and an alternate adapter is connected to the same IP link, the system automatically switches all network accesses from the failed adapter to the alternate. This process ensures uninterrupted access to the network. When multiple network adapters are connected to the same IP link, increased traffic throughput is achieved by spreading the traffic across multiple network adapters.
Java 2 SDK 1.2.2_05a new features:
  • Scalability improvements to more than 20 CPUs
  • Improved just-in time (JIT) compiler optimizations
  • Text-rendering performance improvements
  • poller class demo package -Swing improvements
  • Environment variable LD_BREADTH is ignored by the runtime linker.
  • Runtime linker and its debugger interface are extended for better runtime and core file analysis. This update is identified by a new version number. (See the section "Agent Manipulation.") It expands the rl_flags, rl_bend, and rl_dynamic field of the rd_loadobj_t structure.
  • Validation of displacement-relocated data in regard to its use with copy relocations is now provided.
  • 64-bit filters can be built solely from a mapfile by using the link-editors -64 option.
  • Explanatory notes are provided on why $ORIGIN dynamic string token expansion is restricted within secure applications.
  • Search paths used to locate the dependencies of dynamic objects can be inspected with dlinfo(3DL).
  • dlsym(3DL) and dlinfo(3DL) look-up semantics have been expanded with a new handle, RTLD_SELF.
  • Runtime symbol lookup mechanism used to relocate dynamic objects can be significantly reduced by establishing direct binding information within each dynamic object.
Removable media management now fully supports removable media such as DVD-ROMs, Zip drives, Jaz drives, CD-ROMs, and diskettes update.
Removable Media Manager centralizes access to removable devices in one window update. Users can format, query properties, view directory structures, and where applicable, protect, and slice media.
Solaris Print Manager software can be used to set up a USB printer attached to a SPARC processor-based system with USB ports.
Included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
UTF-8 is an encoding defined by X/Open as a multibyte representation of Unicode. It encompasses most of the characters for traditional single-byte and multibyte locales for European and Asian languages for Solaris locales. The 10/00 release adds Russian, Polish, and two new locales for Catalan.
A utility for writing CD-R and CD-RW disks is now included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
WBEM includes standards for Web-based management of systems, networks, and devices on multiple platforms. This update includes a description of system properties used by the CIM Object Manager uses and describes the new Solaris_Printer and other printing definition classes.
Platform Support:
An updated version of software supporting Netra t11xx Alarms is now included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
Netra Lights Out Management is now included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
Support for Sun Netra ct systems is now included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
Support added for the Hardware Cursor (hwc) module on 64-bit kernels. The hwc module provides a direct path between the mouse driver and the frame buffer, providing faster and more efficient updates when the mouse is moved.
Drivers:
Compaq Smart Array RAID, ATI RAGE 128, ATI RAGE XL, ATI RAGE GY, Intel Gigabit
